Ep 38: Creeping Through the Herd – Bovine Mycoplasma

In this episode, Natasha and Charles explore the topic of Mycoplasma in cattle. Charles also brings Natasha up to speed on BTV-3 and the availability of licensed vaccines to mitigate the spread.

Colin Mason, based in Scotland, joins Charles to discuss the impact of Mycoplasma in cattle from a Scottish perspective. Colin reveals how the ability to detect Mycoplasma has improved over the last 20 years, along with changes to both disease presentations and the levels of disease seen in herds.

Catherine McAloon also joins Charles to discuss her investigative research into Mycoplasma in Irish herds. We find out if herds previously affected by Mycoplasma still carry active infections and how the bacteria can colonise herds without causing disease.

This episode is sponsored by Protivity from Zoetis. Tune in to Kieran O’Mahony, Area Veterinary Manager at Zoetis, to gain insights into the exciting development of the vaccine.

Ep 13: Bracing for Bluetongue – are we ready? (Re-release)

In this episode, we revisit our previous episode on Bluetongue virus serotype 3 as it arrives on our island. We hear from veterinary epidemiologist, Inge Santiman-Berends, about how Bluetongue has affected the Netherlands. We discuss how the virus has been transmitted through midges, possible vaccines, as well as signs and symptoms. We speak with Audrey Jenkinson, Superintending Veterinary Inspector at the Department, about Ireland's plans to manage this highly impactful virus and the key factors we need to take into account.

Ep 1: Udder Health – Drying Off (Part 1) (Re-release)

With the drying-off season fast approaching — and all the challenges it brings — we’re diving back into a previous episode packed with practical insights.

Charles chats with Willie Buckley, based in Bandon, Co. Cork, to discuss if farmers in the area are welcoming the transition from the blanket use of antibiotics in cattle to, now, placing careful selection over which cows are to receive antibiotic treatment, as part of the Cell Check Training Program with Animal Health Ireland.

Looking overseas, hear Charles also interview New Zealand-based practitioner, Ryan Luckman, CEO of Agvisory.nz, due to the similar challenges the country is facing, alongside Ireland, with block spring calving herds at grass. Following on, Charles and Willie look to critically analyse Ryan's insights, including the confidence he inspires in taking the first few steps towards drastically reducing the use of antibiotic tubes, in order for the process to become the accepted norm, along with his emphasis of the importance of hygiene and technique.

Also featured is a discussion between Charles and Maura Langan, Veterinary Advisor and Commercial and Technical Manager at Norbrook, regarding moving away from blanket dry therapy in order to decrease antimicrobial usage.
