We die because we couldn’t leave a weird rock alone and that’s only the beginning. After the fireball, we don’t fade to black or hand-wave a reset. We wake up in two separate judgment halls: one ruled by the Raven Queen behind a porcelain mask and a murder of silent ravens, the other dominated by a platinum dragon with seven spectral gold dragons circling like living memory. They ask the kind of question that hits harder than any critical hit: why do you deserve another chance to live, and what will you do with it?

Back in the mortal world, the consequences are immediate. We crawl out of the dirt exhausted, half-decomposed, and newly branded with divine marks that come with real D&D mechanics and real story weight. Julius bears the Raven Queen’s feather and Jude carries seven “canaries” that are definitely dragons if you ask us. The banter is loud, but the subtext is louder: second chances aren’t free, and promises made to gods don’t stay theoretical for long.

Then we meet Bingo Berrybuckle, an elderly hobbit wizard who knows exactly what that stone was: an abyssal gate stone, part of an ancient threat that can open a pathway for demons. Inside his tower is a hidden extradimensional mansion, endless food, and finally a plan. We learn about the Order of Light, why the gates are waking up, how to spot a growing blight, and where to go next, with a sending stone in hand and three leads on the map: Hammerhelm, Gurney, and Banshee Creek.

  • Campaign Part 1: The Blight In Golden Leaf Forest

The same nightmare hits again: you’re kids in your family home, your parents are alive, and then the lights go out. Something tall and twisted steps from the dark, the world rots into apocalypse, and a voice whispers a warning about the final dawn. When that dream repeats four times in a single week, we stop treating it like bad sleep and start treating it like a quest hook we can’t ignore.

We roll into Sunny Hollow expecting an easy day and maybe a decent drink, but the details don’t add up. The Golden Leaf Forest shimmers like sunlight on coins, Golden Stone Creek glows from river rocks, and yet one section of the woods looks dead black from a distance. In the Sunny Side Up Inn and Tavern, the menu is missing the basics: no meat, no eggs, and the locals are frustrated. The staff point us toward the hunters, who admit something is stripping the forest of game, even driving a falcon back to its handler in minutes with nothing to show for it.

Along the way, we hear about a halfling wizard named Bingo Berrybuckle, his tower near the woods, and a magic item shop that opens only when he decides to come down. Then we do what tabletop RPG adventurers always do: we pick the most suspicious direction and walk straight into it. The blight smells wrong, the trees are black and decayed, and at the center sits a pulsing black stone veined with red. One bad decision later, an arcane gate opens and a fire and smoke creature turns our investigation into a brutal fight with grapples, crits, and an ending that detonates into a cliffhanger.

If you love Dungeons and Dragons actual play, dark fantasy roleplay, and mystery driven campaigns where choices have teeth, hit play, subscribe, and share this with a friend. After you listen, what would you do first in Sunny Hollow: interrogate the wizard, track the blight, or stake out the tavern?

  • We Build A Tiefling Warlock And An Aasimar Sorcerer From Scratch
    Sep 10 2026

    Send us Fan Mail

You can tell a lot about someone by the character they build when the dice are watching. We’re back with a brand-new Dungeons & Dragons campaign series, and we start at the true beginning: character creation, from blank sheets to spell lists, with our friend and returning guest Joe Bennett behind the screen. We’re playing D&D 5e using the 2014 rules, plus Joe’s own character-creation approach shaped by his work running therapeutic D&D groups.

We talk through the six ability scores in plain language, roll stats the classic way, and make the kind of choices that immediately create tension and personality. One of us goes draconic bloodline sorcerer and starts stacking cantrips and first-level spells with an eye toward damage and control. The other leans into a Hexblade warlock, tied to a sentient weapon that whispers through dreams, and then takes the flying tiefling route because sometimes the real plan is escape.

Along the way, Joe shares how he frames species and lore in a counseling context, from dwarven honor and shame to the distrust that follows tieflings, and why these story elements can spark real insight without turning the table into group therapy. We also get practical about spell selection, apps, and the small mistakes every beginner makes when the rules meet the imagination.

If you’re curious about Dungeons & Dragons character creation, therapeutic tabletop roleplaying, or how a campaign can become a mirror for growth, this is the setup you’ve been waiting for. Subscribe, share this with a friend who loves RPGs, and leave a review, then tell us: what character would you bring into a heaven-and-hell campaign?
