The Reality Files — Episode Four: The Source

Following File RF-003, investigators trace the original emergency broadcast to four devices that received it: a household radio, a municipal emergency receiver, a disconnected telephone answering machine, and a television that was unplugged when it was filmed. No two of them share a power source, a network, or a broadcast license.

Then a routine controlled playback — the same thirty-one seconds, run through two synchronized recorders sitting eighteen inches apart — produces two different recordings. Three times in a row, in three different ways. The tape isn't a record of what happened anymore. Every time it plays, it's making something new.

Content notes: emergency-alert tones, tape static and signal distortion, institutional/clinical dialogue depicting mounting unease, implied surveillance, and binaural audio. Headphones are recommended, but the episode remains intelligible on speakers.

After the second WCRN transmission, residents begin leaving their homes with radios, telephones, and recording devices in hand. Some return unable to explain where they have been—and carrying equipment that does not belong to them.

When investigators examine an unfamiliar cassette recorder, its contents raise an unsettling question: was it documenting the incident, or listening to it?

    ### Episode 2: “The Second Broadcast”

Three days after WCRN was silenced, the emergency message returns.

It arrives through radios, telephones, television sets, and disconnected equipment—each transmission guiding its listener toward a distant source of static. But this time, the message speaks in voices they recognize.

As investigators examine the recordings, one question becomes impossible to ignore: if WCRN never transmitted the second broadcast, what did?

    Headphones strongly recommended.
