    Episode 43 -

We begin by looking back at Rovers' dramatic 4-1 extra-time victory over Cork City in the FAI Cup second round. John McGovern stole the headlines with a stunning impact off the bench, scoring twice and providing an assist to help the holders book their place in the next round. We break down the game, discuss the key tactical moments, and look at the performances that made the difference on another memorable night at Tallaght Stadium.

Next, we turn our attention to Roberto Lopes, after it was confirmed that a civic reception will be held in his honour at 2pm on Saturday, 26 July, at Eamonn Ceannt Park, Lourdes Celtic. Following his remarkable FIFA World Cup campaign with Cape Verde, we discuss why this recognition is so richly deserved and what it says about one of Shamrock Rovers' modern greats.

Finally, we look ahead to another huge European challenge as Rovers travel to face Ararat-Armenia in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League second qualifying round tie. We examine the Armenian side, their strengths, key players, recent form, and discuss what Stephen Bradley's men will need to do to bring a positive result back to Tallaght ahead of the return leg.

  • Rovers suffer in Malta and face an uphill battle
    Jul 8 2026

Episode 41 - Rovers suffer in Malta and face an uphill battle

Ryan Brennan and Adam Casey are recording this one minute after the full-time whistle from Malta. Floriana 2, Shamrock Rovers 0. Champions League first qualifying round, first leg. It was not a good night, and we're not here to make it sound better than it was.

In Segment 1, we give the result the honest assessment it deserves. What went wrong in Malta? Was this a failure of preparation, execution, or are Floriana a better side than the pre-tie narrative suggested? We go through the game beat by beat — what the defeat actually looked like, where Rovers were exposed, whether there were any positives to take, and what a 2-0 first leg deficit genuinely means in the context of this tie. We don't do damage limitation on this podcast. If it was a bad performance, we'll say so. If there are mitigating factors, we'll name them honestly.

In Segment 2, we change gear. Jonathan Afolabi has been officially confirmed as a Shamrock Rovers player on a multi-year deal — a signing confirmed before the first leg was played. We go beyond the announcement and into what it actually means. Stephen Bradley described the signing as a changing of the guard, and that phrase is carrying significant weight. Afolabi is not the same profile as the forwards Rovers have relied on. He's a central striker — hold-up play, reference point, finishes from inside the box. We trace his career from the Rovers academy as a kid, to Southampton, to Celtic, to Bohemians, where he finished joint top scorer in the League of Ireland Premier Division in 2023 with 15 goals, to Kortrijk in Belgium, where it didn't work, and now back to Tallaght. We ask whether this is a step forward for him or a return to his level — and we challenge the comfortable homecoming narrative. We also ask what it means for Michael Noonan, who has been getting into the right positions but not converting. Does Afolabi's arrival change the expectation on him?

In Segment 3, we look ahead to Tuesday night's second leg at Tallaght Stadium. Rovers need to overturn a 2-0 deficit in front of their home support to progress to the next round of Champions League qualifying. We assess what's realistically required, what Floriana will try to do at Tallaght, where Rovers can hurt them if they get the tactics right, and what the atmosphere at Tallaght means in a European context. We also ask the hard question — is this tie already over, or is there A genuine belief that Rovers can turn it around?
