  • The Power of Community-Owned Food Systems
    Oct 14 2026

What happens when a community comes together to take ownership of its food system, creating greater access to fresh, healthy food while strengthening the connections between neighbors?

In this episode of The Giving Garden® Podcast, host Martina Halloran sits down with Nina Gordon of OB People's Food Co-op in San Diego, California, for an inspiring conversation about the power of community ownership, food accessibility, and the belief that everyone deserves access to nourishing food.

Together, Martina and Nina explore how cooperative food systems offer an alternative to traditional grocery models, placing the needs of people and communities at the heart of their mission. Their conversation highlights the importance of supporting local growers, making thoughtful food choices, and creating welcoming spaces where individuals feel connected to the food they eat and the people who help bring it to their tables.

They also reflect on the deeper meaning of food security, recognizing that access to healthy food is about more than nourishment. It is about dignity, belonging, and ensuring that communities have a voice in shaping their own futures.

At its heart, this conversation is a reminder that meaningful change often begins close to home. When neighbors invest in one another and work toward a shared vision, they create something far more powerful than a place to shop. They cultivate a community rooted in care, cooperation, and collective well-being.

Because when we take care of how our communities are nourished, we help create a future where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.

Until next time, take care of yourself, take care of one another, and keep making room at the table.

  • Community of Friends, Family and Neighbors
    Sep 30 2026

There is something about October that invites us to come a little closer. As the days grow shorter, the gardens begin to quiet, and the season of harvest gives way to rest, we are reminded that community has seasons too.

In this episode of The Giving Garden® Podcast, Martina Halloran reflects on the everyday relationships that sustain us, the friends who become family, the relatives who know our stories, and the neighbors whose lives unfold just beyond our front doors.

Drawing from her own experiences, Martina explores how our ways of connecting often shift with the seasons. Summer brings spontaneity, gatherings, travel, and long days spent outside. Fall invites a different kind of connection, one rooted in intention, nourishment, conversation, and simply making time to sit together.

Martina shares personal reflections on growing up in a family where food was a language of care, learning that generosity was never defined by how much you had, but by your willingness to share what was available. She also reflects on lessons from recent Giving Garden guests, including the importance of showing up consistently, wrapping support around one another, and creating spaces where people feel seen, heard, and valued.

From calling the friend you have been meaning to check on, to bringing a meal to a neighbor, inviting someone to your table, or simply learning the name of the person next door, this episode is a reminder that meaningful community is often built through the smallest acts of attention.

Martina also explores another important part of community, allowing ourselves to receive care. Like the garden, we cannot give endlessly. There are seasons for growth, seasons for abundance, and seasons for rest. Caring for one another means making room for all of them.

As we enter this season of harvest, Martina invites us to consider a different kind of abundance. Not simply what we have gathered for ourselves, but what we have enough of to share.

Because perhaps the greatest harvest is found around the tables we create, in the relationships we tend, and in the simple act of making room for one more person.

Until next time, take care of yourself, take care of one another, and keep making room at the table. To learn more about The Giving Garden®, visit The Giving Garden | Dr. Hauschka Skin Care | Dr. Hauschka

  • Helping Young People Find Their Voice with Keren Taylor, Founder and Executive Director of WriteGirl
    Sep 16 2026

What happens when a young person is given the space, encouragement, and support to discover the power of their own voice?

In this episode of The Giving Garden® Podcast, Martina Halloran sits down with Keren Taylor, Founder and Executive Director of WriteGirl, for an inspiring conversation about mentorship, creativity, confidence, and the importance of creating spaces where young people feel seen, heard, and valued.

For decades, WriteGirl has brought professional women writers together with teenage girls and gender-expansive youth, using creative writing and mentorship to help young people strengthen their voices, develop their talents, and imagine new possibilities for their futures. Keren shares the story behind WriteGirl, the impact of connecting young people with caring mentors, and what she has learned from watching thousands of young writers discover that their experiences and perspectives matter.

Together, Martina and Keren explore why mentorship can be so transformative, especially during the years when young people are beginning to understand who they are and where they belong. Their conversation reflects on the importance of listening, showing up consistently, and creating opportunities for young people to express themselves without fear of judgment.

They also discuss creativity as more than an artistic pursuit. Writing can become a pathway to confidence, connection, self-discovery, and possibility. When young people are encouraged to tell their stories in their own words, they begin to recognize the value of their ideas and the strength of their individual voices.

At its heart, this episode is a reminder that empowering the next generation does not always begin with having the answers. Sometimes, it begins with making space, offering encouragement, and being willing to listen.

Because when we help young people find their voices, we help them see that their stories matter, their ideas have value, and there is a place in the world for what they have to say.

Join us for Helping Young People Find Their Voice, a conversation about mentorship, creativity, community, and what can grow when someone believes in you.
