  • Ian Baltutis, NC House District 63: Wages, Childcare, and the Cost of Living l The Flow with Bob Martin
    Oct 19 2026
What makes a great political leader: cutting costs, winning headlines, or listening to the people who live with the consequences? On The Flow with Bob Martin, former Burlington Mayor Ian Baltutis explores how community-centered leadership, smart public investment, and practical problem-solving can help build a stronger future. Bob Martin and Ian Baltutis discuss the real challenges facing North Carolina communities, from rising living costs and stagnant wages to affordable childcare, healthcare access, education funding, and infrastructure. Drawing on his experience as a small-business owner and local government leader, Ian explains how entrepreneurial thinking can help communities solve problems with limited resources. They examine the long-term value of public investment, the role of small businesses in job creation, and why efficiency requires empowering workers rather than simply cutting budgets. The conversation also explores inclusive political leadership, the importance of listening to residents, and the need to look beyond election cycles when making decisions that affect future generations. Ian shares why community representation, practical solutions, and a responsive government matter—and why leaders must appeal to people's better angels rather than their fears. Leaders must understand the problems people actually experience before developing policies or solutions. Public investment can create long-term value. Education, infrastructure, healthcare, and childcare support stronger communities and future economic opportunity. Small businesses deserve meaningful support. Local entrepreneurs help create jobs, address community needs, and keep money circulating within local economies. Efficiency means more than cutting costs. • Why Freedom and Power Keep Colliding l The Flow with Bob Martin
    Oct 16 2026
Why do societies that promise freedom and security so often struggle with power, division, and political corruption? This conversation explores the tension between individual liberty, collective responsibility, and the systems that shape our lives. Bob Martin welcomes author and deep thinker James Keena to The Flow for a thoughtful discussion about socialism, communism, authoritarianism, and the meaning of freedom. They examine the difference between individual autonomy and government control, the influence of political and financial elites, and the growing distance between ordinary citizens and the institutions that govern them. The conversation explores human nature, tribal cooperation, community, family responsibility, and the challenge of finding a balance between personal freedom and society's shared needs. They also discuss whether larger governments and institutions can weaken the relationships that once helped communities thrive, the role of public programs and charitable organizations, and the importance of questioning political assumptions. James shares how his experiences in politics inspired his Pathless Land novels, including 2084 American Apocalypse, Outcast Island, and The Elites versus Everyone Else. Together, Bob and James consider how storytelling can help us examine power, responsibility, and the future of society. What does a free and compassionate society look like to you? Watch or listen to the full conversation and join the discussion. And the only way, the only time compassion and altruism become a problem is when it becomes forced on people.” — James Keena “Somewhere in between those two ends, anarchy and totalitarianism, is a Goldilocks zone where we have sufficient rules where we can say, I feel safe in this society.” — James Keena “I just want people to start to question what they see today, regardless of you know, where your thought process takes you.” - James Keena “It may be that simply technology and society have grown so big that really they're beyond our intellectual capacity to govern them.” — Bob Martin “Two things can be true at the same time.” — Bob Martin 💡 Episode Key Takeaways Freedom requires boundaries. The discussion explores the challenge of balancing individual autonomy with the laws and structures needed for a functioning society. Human cooperation matters. Both speakers examine how trust, compassion, and mutual support helped human communities survive. Power can become disconnected from people. James Keena argues that political and financial elites can influence government in ways that weaken ordinary citizens' control. Personal responsibility shapes the future. James Keena emphasizes that our choices, actions, and values contribute to the people we become. Question assumptions and consider complexity. • What’s Happening to American Education and Democracy? l The Flow with Bob Martin
    Oct 9 2026
What happens when students can access almost any information instantly—but lose the ability to question it, connect it, and decide what is actually true? Lee Knapp joins Bob Martin for a wide-ranging conversation about education, critical thinking, history, political polarization, democracy, faith, economics, and the role teachers can play in helping people think for themselves. Lee Knapp reflects on the teacher who inspired her career, decades spent teaching history, returning to her former high school, and witnessing dramatic changes in diversity and education. She and Bob explore whether technology and standardized testing have changed how students learn, why information alone is not enough without the ability to synthesize evidence, and why developing a personal “BS detector” matters in a world where people can be manipulated by misinformation and political messaging. Their conversation expands into race and education, the Constitution, civic responsibility, political polarization, religion, Christian nationalism, wealth inequality, rugged individualism, public education, and the changing role of government. Lee also discusses her memoir, History Rhymes with Lee, and why exposure to people different from ourselves can deepen empathy and challenge assumptions. Watch or listen to the full episode of The Flow with Bob Martin for a thoughtful conversation about education, critical thinking, democracy, and what it means to remain curious in a changing society. And I think that we have to say what's so, but we are restrained from doing that in the overall desire to be fair.” - Bob Martin 💡 Episode Key Takeaways Information isn't the same as knowledge. The ability to synthesize evidence and form a coherent understanding is essential. Critical thinking protects against manipulation. Developing the ability to question claims and recognize weak arguments is fundamental to civic life. Education can build empathy. Exposure to people with different backgrounds can challenge assumptions and expand our understanding of others. People are more than political labels. Lee argues that excessive tribalism can prevent us from seeing individuals as individuals. Connection requires participation. When people feel disconnected from community, Lee suggests that sometimes we have to actively go out and make something happen. 🔗 Connect with Lee Knapp Website: https://imhistorybook.com/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/lee.knapp.16 LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/lee-knapp-81150b8/?isSelfProfile=false Substack: https://leeknapp.substack.com/?utm_campaign=profile_chips 🔗 Connect with Bob Martin: Substack: https://iambobmartin.substack.com/publish/home Podbean: https://podcastbobm.podbean.com/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@IamBobMartin Email: contact@theflowmedia.com Explore My Published Books https://authorbobmartin.com/ OR To explore my blogs, vlogs, podcasts, videos, and books, or to send Bob Martin a message please click here: https://theflowmedia.com #CriticalThinking #Education #AmericanEducation #Democracy #TheFlowWithBobMartin

  • The Podium and the Cheap Seats l The Flow: Commentary by Bob Martin
    Oct 7 2026

Political polarization becomes dangerous when people stop seeing those across the aisle as fellow citizens and begin seeing them as a threat that must be defeated—or removed.

In this episode of The Flow, Bob Martin takes a deeper look at political extremism and the familiar argument that “there are extremists on both sides.” He acknowledges troubling examples of extremism from both Democrats and Republicans, but argues that simply saying “both sides” can obscure important differences in who is speaking, where the rhetoric comes from, and how much influence it carries. Bob explores the contrast between extremists in the “cheap seats” and those at the “podium,” and examines how political rhetoric can move from anger and dehumanization toward something far more dangerous. He also reflects on how each political side can selectively focus on the other side’s worst behavior while overlooking its own, creating an increasingly distorted picture of political opponents. Drawing on the example of Ted Kennedy and John McCain, Bob remembers a time when deep political disagreement could coexist with a recognition that opponents were still fellow Americans. At the heart of the conversation is a challenge: What would it take for us to look beyond our political divisions and recognize what is happening beneath them?

Watch or listen to the full episode of The Flow with Bob Martin and stay engaged in the conversation about political polarization, extremism, democracy, and what it means to remain awake and aware in a divided America.

  • Commit Together and Turn Concern Into Action l The Flow with Bob Martin
    Oct 2 2026

Concern alone doesn’t create change—action does. Paul M. Katz joins Bob Martin to explore how ordinary people can move beyond civic overwhelm, take meaningful first steps, and rediscover the power of acting together.

Drawing on decades of work connecting entertainment, advocacy, and social impact, Paul shares how his experiences led to Commit Together, an initiative designed to help people turn concern into practical civic participation. He explains why disengagement isn’t always about apathy—sometimes people simply feel overwhelmed and don’t know where to begin. The conversation explores the power of small, achievable actions, from becoming more informed and participating in your community to finding organizations that align with your values. Paul also shares the idea that “action overcomes anxiety,” showing how taking one step can restore a sense of agency and connect people with others who care about the same issues. Bob and Paul discuss community, trust, civic participation, political differences, and why meaningful change doesn’t always begin with a grand gesture—it can begin with one person deciding to act.

You don’t have to solve everything to make a difference. Discover how one meaningful step can turn concern into action—and action into connection. Watch or listen to the full episode of The Flow with Bob Martin, and explore ways to get involved through Paul’s Commit Together initiative.

“The system is only based on confidence and trust.” — Bob Martin

    💡 Episode Key Takeaways

Small actions can restore personal agency. Civic participation doesn't require becoming a full-time activist; registering to vote, attending a meeting, sharing information, donating, or helping someone else participate can be meaningful first steps.

Overwhelm isn't the same as apathy. Paul argues that many people care deeply about their communities and democracy but struggle with information overload and uncertainty about where to begin.

Action can reduce anxiety. Taking one manageable step can replace helplessness with momentum, confidence, and a greater sense of efficacy.

Community multiplies individual impact. Civic engagement connects people with others who share concerns and creates a sense that they aren't facing difficult issues alone.

Democracy depends on participation and trust. The conversation emphasizes voting, checks and balances, credible institutions, fair processes, accountability, and citizens remaining engaged even when political disagreements persist.

  • Christianity is on the Ballot (Who is My Neighbor, Really?) l The Flow: Commentary by Bob Martin
    Sep 30 2026

What happens when we decide who deserves our compassion—and who doesn't? A devastating flood in Nepal raises a much deeper question: Who is our neighbor, and what does our faith ask us to do when someone is in danger?

Bob Martin explores the meaning of the biblical command to “love your neighbor as yourself” through the story of the Good Samaritan and a modern debate over disaster preparedness, foreign aid, and the cancellation of the SERVIR flood-warning program. He examines the tension between America First, Christian responsibility, compassion, and the question of whether national borders or religious identity should determine who deserves our concern. The conversation also looks at the cost of foreign assistance, government spending, and how our choices reveal the values we claim to hold. At its heart, this episode asks what it really means to live out faith, compassion, generosity, and love of neighbor in a divided world.
