NIRVANA THE BAND THE SHOW THE WEB SERIES: Reviewed!

Ok so here we are. We’re doing it again. Another episode. Another episode of the podcast. A podcast destined for a live show at The Rivoli:

It’s that show you know talking about that other show you know. Both little modest operations just made with LOVE - WE ARE SHARING THE LOVE! THE CCCAH HEARTS NTBTS! At least in theory, the fact that they did it all in a DIY fashion for the love of the game. Whether we actually loved it or not is not a pre-determined given … ok, have I projected too much that we both really enjoyed it? SPOILERS! EPISODE SPOILERS! NIRVANA THE BAND THE SHOW THE WEB SERIES SPOILERS ALSO! So many spoilers. Welcome to the spoiler podcast, that is basically our deal.

Ok anyway, want to hear us reviewing a whole ass WEB SERIES TEN EPISODES LONG?? Excluding the bonus eleventh episode which is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED?? (Shout out the Buena Vista Social Club!!) Of course you do!

Here is the web series. We watched the DVD versions, not the Web versions or DVD commentaries … yet! Haha! But yes you can toggle between the different versions so easily. A handy sidebar illustrating the differences between the DVD versions and Web versions for the majority of the episodes is some especially juicy stuff for the real heads! From not knowing anything about nirvana the band the show to being real heads, eh (*Canadian style “eh”) we love it: https://nirvannathebandthe.show/episodes/

Watch Matt Johnson roast some mid reviews of BlackBerry! My guy has Letterboxd thoughts: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_S_zwmYZLU0

Watch Matt and Jay talk about how not to get sued and outline their creative rules. Genuinely illuminating lol: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MbegN2RG_bc

Metallica were the stars of our cold open! I look forward to our full season reviewing every Sphere show live in Vegas … at the Sphere as the opening act for Metallica each subsequent night orrr … ? Matt Johnson won’t let us get sued Christopher, don’t worry: https://pitchfork.com/news/metallica-confirm-life-burns-faster-residency-at-sphere/

Special FAVE MOMENT FROM THE POD RECORD note for VIP read-the-whole-show-notes-members only: When Christopher made himself smile and said “I’m glad I can still make you laugh after all these years” like what the hell what is this rom com bullshit? Oh wait, we’re literally nirvana the band, yep. The cultural content consumption appraisal hour the show. Will we be a web series by next week? Guessing by how packed the shared calendars are looking (we actually haven’t done that but imagine hahaha) I’ll spoil this for y’all: NOT BY NEXT WEEK NO lol.

WHY DO UK SUPERMARKETS HAVE CLOCK TOWERS BY CHRIS SPARGO: REVIEWED!

Well hello there podcast listener. The story of our journey to become YouTubers (???) starts in 2023. We were post-covid and had chatted about starting a podcast for years. Two middle aged dudes (excuse me?) talking to each other and just sending their chats out there into the ether on a consistently (RIP week 2) weekly basis for years and years, at this point. If you think about it, it doesn’t make any sense. It’s clearly not serving any functional purpose. So why do so many podcasts in the UK have one of these (*points at co-host) and have you ever actually asked yourself … what’s all that about?

Anyway, how are you today? What kind of day has it been? And how did you feel about the thirty second game not featuring in the cold open? We certainly weren’t sure. Or Jeffrey claiming back the rights to the “let’s start the show” this week. Christopher has threatened to wrest the reigns back and reclaim the “let’s start the show” revolution for his own purposes next week. The suspense is thrilling, if not barely worth a mention. But hey, we chatted about it. So you have to hear about it. And we got to a thirty second game eventually!

Real talk though, what are your thoughts on cold opens? 2 and a half minutes to 3 minutes is the window, no? But yeah, why are we talking about literally the most trivial matters possible in this week’s show notes? Well let’s just say that we (much like the YouTube algorithm) have been Chris Spargo pilled. Let the rest of the shownotes show this, for the record, by simply being a series of relevant YouTube titles with their associated links without any further commentary. Enjoy.

Special FAVE MOMENT FROM THE POD RECORD note for VIP read-the-whole-show-notes-members only: Christopher’s story about his name being referenced in a social media post. That shit was crazy. Did you guys hear that? I am still processing all that. Also Christopher had to choose between three pitches this week based on run times alone. That was some fun further gamification of the … games we play. Here are the three run times he chose between:

      1 hour 28 minutes

      2 hours 22 minutes

      3 hours 30 minutes

Wild. Ok so how do we end these shownotes? Grabbing our crisps and dropping some and looking around a bit? Hey who cares about endings, who here needs a beginning, middle and end when you can just spam MIDDLE energy? Look ma, I’m MIDMAXXING.

THE NEWSROOM SERIES FINALE SEASON 3 EPISODE 6: Reviewed!

We finally did it (we’re here) and we’re going from a pilot to a finale in the course of a handful of episodes. Season six truly is a season of wonders. And spoilers. It’s not just episode spoilers today, it’s whole show spoilers. Details spoilers. Quote spoilers. Character arc spoilers. Relationship spoilers. Will they won’t they … they did or did not spoilers! So yeah. It might be gibberish if you have never Newsroom’d. If you would like to Newsroom … maybe go listen to us reviewing the pilot and see if it tickles your fancy. Or if you’re ambivalent but enjoy hearing friends really (hurriedly) go into the weeds discussing the series finale of a show they have just finished watching … then great, we’re happy to have you! *shuffles papers*

Watch the finale of The Newsroom by going on to eBay and buying Season 3 of The Newsroom like I did dammit: ebay.co.uk

Shout out Hasan Mutlluuz on Dailymotion (you’ll have to do some scrolling and/or searching to find it but hey): https://www.dailymotion.com/hasanmutlluuz

Let’s listen to the actual greatest podcast in the world … roast Aaron Sorkin for 8 hours straight. That is right. As mentioned on our podcast (an up and coming podcast) they roast him good, hot diggety damn. But hey … it is my contention that if your art is just so damn unique to you that your corpus can be roasted for nearly 8 hours straight across various works … then surely … you have a singular-ass style! And surely this is what we should all be striving for. To be the most ourselves possible. But yes, let’s lol: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jsYg97XM_6s

Ok now that we have the roasting out of the way and the critical temperature has been balanced out here … let’s watch Aaron Sorkin talking to David Brooks about CHARACTER. David Brooks is well into CHARACTER and as such, a pretty good conversation is had: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eucVNYQNGAs

Richard Lawson wrote a review of the series finale for Vanity Fair, which is well worth a read: https://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2014/12/the-newsroom-series-finale

The Atlantic (before it was bad) explained to us the real life incident from 1998 that inspired “Operation Genoa” in the show: https://www.theatlantic.com/entertainment/archive/2013/08/the-news-vs-i-the-newsroom-i-was-there-a-real-genoa-report-yes-in-1998/278795/

Special FAVE MOMENT FROM THE POD RECORD note for VIP read-the-whole-show-notes-members only: When Christopher started banging on about how it is an indictment of this sixth season’s #REVIEW1THING format that we don’t roll into the order of who guesses and scores first that smoothly (like has he heard heard our run ups to a thirty second game) … bro I literally don’t know what you’re talking about, who cares about the order!? OUR SCORES ARE LOCKED IN! I literally don’t know what you’re talking about when you bang on about this. Christopher, you came down here, insulted my format and demanded to know why we didn't prepare a better one. Let me add this to the conversation. For two years I've been listening to people like you say they can't believe no one's been prosecuted for these Wall Street crimes and after two years I'm still fuzzy on what crime was committed and who should be prosecuted for it. You're a podcast host who gets to spend an hour on one subject. And I'm at least an average consumer of news, and you have failed to get me to understand what you've called the most important story of the last ten years. So, after you get done telling me how badly we did *our* job last night, you may want to do an internal investigation of your own work.
