    • Episode 14: The Biggest News Items from December in the Credit & Collections Industry
      Jan 15 2026
Is the CFPB Funding Feud creating a sort of 'Shadow CFPB?' In this second installment of our deep-dive panel series sponsored by CSS Impact, host Steve Ruderman welcomes back industry experts Stefanie Jackson, John McNamara, Joann Needleman, and CSS Impact's Rob Grafrath to dissect the latest legal and political shifts rocking the credit and collections landscape. The panel explores Judge Amy Berman Jackson's recent ruling, which rejects the administration's claim of a "lapse in appropriations" while Stefanie breaks down the legal maneuvers used to challenge the Bureau’s existence and John provides a candid rant on why the current funding arguments may be dead on arrival based on original congressional intent.

      Key Topics Discussed:

      - The Funding Cliff: Why the CFPB claimed it would run out of money in January 2026 and how the courts are pushing back against what some call a "manufactured" crisis. - Rohit Chopra’s New Role: The former CFPB Director is now leading a "blue state" consumer protection initiative. Is this the birth of a "Shadow CFPB" fueled by 22 State Attorneys General?

      - The Populist Shift: Why consumer protection is no longer just a "red vs. blue" issue, but a populist one centered on affordability and junk fees. - State-Level "Whack-a-Mole": The nightmare of a patchwork regulatory environment as states like New York, Illinois, and Nevada ramp up licensing and enforcement.

      - The Future of AI & Privacy: Why national standards are desperately needed to prevent cross-border regulatory chaos in the age of digital communication.

    • Episode 12: CFPB Collection Rules & Regs 2025 with John McNamara
      Oct 28 2025
Debt Collection has changed considerably over the last half century. Just ask John McNamara- the former Assistant Director and long-time staffer at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (or CFBP for short), John began his career as a debt collector in 1983. Since then, he's moved from the American Credit Bureau to senior executive roles, co-founding Fidelis Recovery Solutions, and serving as Chief Marketing Officer for Live Vox, before spending 11 years at the CFPB. As John likes to tell it, Debt Collection is a marketing problem based on raising engagement and re-establishing hope for debtors - but if we can understand the shape of the industry, then what's making the job so difficult in 2025?

This week on the podcast, John's sitting down with Steve to share his perspective on serving under three different CFPB directors as the 'voice of industry reality', his efforts on Regulation F (including the language around using text and email for debt communication and the problem with the FOTI rule), where the CFPB is headed due to the ongoing volatile political landscape surrounding the Bureau in the age of President Trump's second term in office, and John's new role as Chief Growth Officer for Avtal with their success-based pricing and principled approach to consumer engagement.
