  • See Your Custom Home Before You Build with Adam Katz of CRAYDL
    Oct 19 2026

Seeing your custom home before construction gives you a chance to question the layout and make changes while they're still on screen. Adam Katz of CRAYDL joins Tony Calvis, Jr. on The Calvis Wyant Podcast to explain how virtual design and construction can help homeowners and their teams work through those decisions earlier.

Adam describes bringing architectural plans, engineering and interior design information into a shared model. The team can look for conflicts between systems, check dimensions and see whether the details fit together. Keeping that information current matters when a change to one part of the home affects several others.

He walks through a recovery project where the framed house differed from the plans. CRAYDL used a LiDAR scan to compare existing conditions with the drawings, then worked with the builder and interior designer to resolve discrepancies. A simple gray model helped everyone review the spaces before finishes and selections were added for the homeowner's walkthrough.

The examples get specific: a cabinet layout that was five inches too long, a fireplace mantel too shallow for the homeowner's picture frames, and hidden pantry doors that felt narrow. These are the kinds of questions Adam wants clients to raise before materials are ordered or installed. He also shares a modeling mistake involving ceiling heights and the verification step his team added afterward.

Tony and Adam discuss how this work supports the architect, interior designer and builder, and why the homeowner benefits from bringing the full team in early. The conversation covers the time it takes to coordinate a design change and the limits of asking software to do that work without experienced people checking it.

Later, Adam explains why a cost-per-square-foot figure needs a defined scope. He describes working through room requirements, appliance choices and builder-specific costs, then revisiting the budget as the design develops. He also shares his view of where AI could help builders manage information.

For homeowners planning a custom home or major renovation in Scottsdale, Paradise Valley, Phoenix or beyond, the conversation offers a closer look at the decisions worth working through before construction begins.

  • Interior Design Decisions That Lead to the Best Build – With Jessica Jensen
    Sep 22 2026

What should you bring to your first meeting with an interior designer, and how do you know the design is moving in the right direction? Jessica Jensen of Stylescape Studio joins Tony Calvis, Jr. on The Calvis Wyant Podcast to walk through the decisions behind a custom home's interior.

Jessica recommends arriving with a budget, a timeline, and visual references. You don't need to have every answer, or even have your architect and builder selected. She explains how she helps clients make sense of their inspiration, understand the next step, and become comfortable with decisions they'll live with for years.

That work starts with conversations about the homeowners' daily lives. Children, pets, or a parent moving in can change what a home needs to accommodate. Marble may suit someone who welcomes its patina and frustrate someone who expects it to stay pristine. Spending follows the client's priorities too: someone who rarely cooks may still want a kitchen with visual impact.

To make progress visible, Jessica walks clients through a mock presentation at the outset and explains what each meeting will accomplish. She describes how she paces selections to manage decision fatigue, then records the details for construction. A separate, color-coded cabinet hardware drawing gives the trades a clear view of which pull belongs on which door.

The discussion also covers bringing the designer in with the architect, evaluating a builder's communication and systems, and the cost of revisiting layouts once construction is underway. Jessica explains why a contemporary interior with fewer finishes demands close attention to each detail.

Later, she shares how floor plans become elevations and 3D renderings, where AI helps, and what it still misses about scale, codes, and buildability. She also discusses using trends in easier-to-change elements, such as textiles and wall coverings, while taking a longer view of the home's bigger decisions.

  • Mark Candelaria on Designing Custom Homes Around the Way Clients Live
    Aug 24 2026

Architect Mark Candelaria joins Tony Calvis, Jr. on The Calvis Wyant Podcast to talk about what happens before a luxury custom home ever becomes a finished set of plans.

Mark is the founding principal behind Candelaria Design Associates, a Phoenix-founded luxury architecture firm specializing in custom residential homes, spec homes, and boutique commercial spaces. In this conversation, he explains why strong homes begin with relationships: the client, architect, builder, interior designer, and trade partners understanding one another early enough to make better decisions together.

That early alignment changes the questions a team can ask. Instead of beginning with isolated drawings or selecting details before the big ideas are settled, Mark starts with the client’s routines, priorities, site, and the people who will help deliver the work. He describes bringing the builder and interior designer into the room early so creative ideas can be tested against cost, code, materials, and constructability while there is still room to adjust.

The episode follows Candelaria’s client experience from office dinners and Italy tours to quick sketches, room cutouts, early cost conversations, and the “macro before micro” thinking that helps clients see how they want to live. Mark explains how teams can move simple room shapes around a site plan, study relationships and alignments, and establish the home’s major moves before worrying about a refrigerator or another individual selection.

Tony and Mark also talk about why a thoughtful design year should not be rushed, how travel and cooking deepen client relationships, and why the finished house should act as a vessel for daily life and memories. Mark shares stories about difficult sites, including an unusual tunnel solution on Camelback Mountain, and discusses remodels, quick hand sketches, office culture, and the experiences that help clients imagine possibility.

The conversation looks forward without treating tools as shortcuts. Mark describes AI as a faster communication tool, not a replacement for design judgment, and reflects on lessons from Habitat for Humanity’s code-compliant 3D printed home.

For homeowners planning a custom home or major renovation in Scottsdale, Paradise Valley, Phoenix, or beyond, this episode offers a practical way to think about team selection, discovery, communication, and the decisions that shape a home before construction begins.
