    • Climate Change and Human Migration
      Oct 16 2024

Join Dr. Nicholas Choquette-Levy to discuss how migration plays a fundamental role in shaping today's society. As of 2020, there were 280 million international migrants globally and an estimated 750 million additional people who have migrated within their country's borders (IOM 2022). Migration affects not just those who move but also their family and social relations in origin communities through remittances (accounting for an estimated 700 billion USD in 2022) and communities receiving migrants. Climate change has already started to reshape migration patterns by threatening livelihoods in vulnerable communities and changing the social and economic conditions along traditional migration corridors. As the world warms, climate will likely have an increasing impact on people's desires and capabilities to migrate in the future. This session will explore how climate influences human migration through a hybrid presentation and an interactive game in which we'll investigate three things: What are the ways in which climate is shaping migration patterns? What research tools exist to investigate these issues? How does migration fit into governance strategies to build resilience to future climate impacts? This session is for anyone interested in exploring interdisciplinary climate challenges—no prior experience or knowledge is required!
