  • 279 | The Grateful Life: Leading From Gratitude | SMC Podcast
    Nov 5 2026

It's easy to look at student ministry and focus on what's missing.

Not enough volunteers. Not enough students. Not enough money. Not enough time. And sometimes, not enough visible results to feel like what we're doing is making a difference.

But what happens when we allow those limitations to shape the way we lead?

In this episode of Student Ministry Conversations, Brent and David kick off November's series, Gratitude, Generosity, and Perspective, by exploring the difference between leading from scarcity and leading from gratitude. We'll discuss how comparison, unmet expectations, and difficult ministry seasons can distort our perspective—and how gratitude helps us recognize God's faithfulness without pretending that ministry challenges aren't real.

We'll also explore practical ways to cultivate gratitude among leaders and volunteers, especially when ministry feels difficult.

Because gratitude isn't pretending we have everything we need. It's learning to recognize God's provision and remain faithful with what He's entrusted to us.

Join Brent and David as we explore what it means to lead with thankful hearts, open hands, and renewed perspective.

  • 278 | What Would You Change In Your Ministry? | SMC Podcast
    Oct 29 2026

If you could change three things about your student ministry right now, what would they be?

In this standalone episode of Student Ministry Conversations, Brent and David take an honest look at their current ministries and discuss the things they would change, simplify, strengthen, or approach differently.

We're not talking about hypothetical ministries or looking back at what we wish we'd done years ago. We're examining the ministries we're leading today—the programs, systems, relationships, and leadership decisions that shape our weekly work with students.

Through honest conversation, we'll explore what's working, what might need adjusting, and why even experienced youth pastors need to remain willing to evaluate their approach.

Because faithful ministry doesn't mean doing everything the same way forever. Sometimes it means having the humility to recognize when something needs to change.

Whether you're leading a small youth group or a large student ministry, this episode will challenge you to ask:

If I were evaluating my ministry today, what would I change—and what's keeping me from changing it?

  • 277 | Anchored Faith: Standing Firm in a Shifting World | SMC Podcast
    Oct 22 2026

Students are growing up in a culture filled with competing voices telling them what to believe, value, celebrate, reject, and become. Our response cannot simply be teaching them to fear the world around them—or to absorb everything it tells them.

In this episode, Brent and David explore what it means to disciple students toward biblical conviction without fear, hostility, or isolation. We'll talk about helping students distinguish conviction from reaction, teaching them to engage people who disagree with them, and forming a faith anchored deeply enough in Christ to remain faithful when cultural expectations change.

Standing firm doesn't require students to become angry at the world around them. It requires them to become deeply rooted in Christ.

  • 276 | Anchored Faith: When Doubt Shows Up | SMC Podcast
    Oct 15 2026

What happens when a student says, “I'm not sure I believe this anymore”? How a leader responds in that moment may shape whether that student continues bringing their questions to Christian community—or learns to hide them.

In this episode, Brent and David talk about creating ministries where students can wrestle honestly with difficult questions without treating doubt as either rebellion or something to celebrate. We'll discuss listening before answering, distinguishing different kinds of doubt, admitting when we don't know, and helping students pursue truth rather than run from their questions.

The presence of a question doesn't necessarily mean the absence of faith. Sometimes questions are where deeper faith begins.

  • 275 | Anchored Faith: Facing Fear with Faith | SMC Podcast
    Oct 8 2026

Students are growing up surrounded by reasons to feel uncertain. They worry about school, friendships, family, their future, world events, and situations they cannot control. Student ministry leaders cannot promise them a life without fear—but we can help them discover what it means to trust God in the middle of it.

In this episode, Brent and David discuss how to disciple students through fear without minimizing what they're experiencing or offering shallow Christian answers. We'll explore biblical trust, the difference between faith and certainty, and practical ways leaders can help students anchor themselves to the character of God.

Faith doesn't mean there's nothing to fear. It means fear doesn't get the final word.

  • 274 | Anchored Faith: Faith That Lasts | SMC Podcast
    Oct 1 2026

Student ministry can easily become focused on visible moments—big responses, emotional worship experiences, packed events, and students who seem passionate about Jesus. But what happens when the moment passes?

In this episode, Brent and David explore what it means to disciple students toward a faith that lasts. We’ll talk about the difference between spiritual excitement and spiritual formation, why deep roots are usually developed through ordinary practices, and how youth leaders can build ministries that prepare students for seasons when following Jesus becomes difficult.

Because the goal isn't simply students who respond to Jesus today. It's students who are still following Him years from now.

  • 273 | Culture of Belonging: When Students Feel on the Fringe | SMC Podcast
    Sep 24 2026
Reaching the overlooked and disconnectedEpisode Description

Not every student walks into your ministry feeling confident or connected. Some stay on the edges—quiet, unsure, and easy to overlook.

In this episode, we focus on how student ministry leaders can intentionally reach students who feel on the fringe. We’ll talk about recognizing the signs of disconnection, building trust slowly, and creating pathways for even the most hesitant students to step into community.

Because often, the students who seem the least engaged are the ones most in need of belonging.

If you want to lead a ministry that sees and reaches every student—not just the most visible ones—this episode will help you move toward them with purpose and care.

    Inclusion without cliquesEpisode Description
