Practice vs. Playing: Turning Scales Into Music

Knowing a scale is one thing. Turning it into music is something else entirely.

In this discussion, Steve breaks down the difference between practicing the guitar and actually playing/improvising, with a focus on helping developing players move beyond simply running scale patterns. Topics include visualization, metronome practice, connecting scale positions, meandering, groove, eighth-note phrasing, dynamics, space, articulation, and gradually introducing sixteenth notes.

The goal is simple: learn how to take the scales you already know and start making them sound musical.

The fastest way to lose confidence on stage is a simple problem that turns into a spiral: you don’t know the tune well enough, the arrangement is different than you expected, and your paper chart is fighting you with page turns and missing notes. We’ve all been there. So we’re talking about a solution that’s practical, affordable, and surprisingly “old school” in spirit: using an iPad as a dependable music stand for real gig life.

I break down why tablets make the most sense when you’re playing in multiple projects and constantly learning new material you may never touch again, from church gigs to orchestras to musical theater. You’ll hear the exact workflow I use with the Fourscore app, including how I organize a massive library, build set lists for specific bands, and write the kind of notes that actually save you later: key signatures, cues, dynamics, shortened sections, and those weird “skip this bar” moments that only happen in one arrangement.

We also get concrete about sourcing charts fast, including pulling a tab or chord chart from Ultimate Guitar, exporting it, and importing it into Fourscore so it’s gig-ready. And I share a real story where having the right chart in the moment exposed a version mismatch and key changes that could have derailed the whole performance.

If you want a cleaner, calmer setup for live performance, subscribe, share this with a bandmate who always forgets the bridge, and leave a quick review with your favorite on-stage survival tip.

  • Does Going Wireless Change Your Guitar Tone? | CFG SonikSphere NEO
    Sep 26 2026

Fast chargers are everywhere, and that’s exactly why guitar wireless systems get accidentally killed. We talk through the Sonic Sphere Neal Wireless System from CFG and start with the unglamorous detail that saves your gear: power. The manual calls for a standard 5V 1A USB source (5 watts max), and using high-voltage fast chargers can fry the batteries. If you’ve got a drawer full of phone bricks and you’ve been treating them like they’re interchangeable, this is the kind of tip that keeps your wireless working for the long haul.

From there, we keep it practical and hands-on: how the transmitter and receiver flip out, plug in, and sync instantly by matching colors. We explain how easy channel changes are (one button press on the transmitter) and why that matters when you’re troubleshooting interference quickly. We also cover fit and usability for real guitars, including angled input jacks, and a simple battery-care habit that helps lithium batteries last longer when you’re not using the system regularly.

Then we get to the question everyone cares about: tone. We run an A/B comparison of cable versus wireless using the same settings across clean, crunch, and high gain. We also dig into a huge pain point for many players, active pickups and hot outputs, and how the built-in 10 dB pad can keep your signal from overdriving the wireless front end while staying consistent across different guitars.

If you’ve been looking for an affordable, easy-to-use guitar wireless system that works with active pickups and doesn’t add a bunch of setup hassle, hit play. Subscribe, share this with a bandmate who keeps losing cables, and leave a review with your verdict: cable or wireless for your next show?
