Stephen Hawking became one of the most influential physicists and science communicators of the modern era by exploring some of the deepest questions in cosmology. His research focused on the origin of the universe, singularities, black holes, and the difficult relationship between gravity and quantum mechanics.
His most famous scientific contribution was the prediction that black holes are not completely black. Through quantum effects, they can emit what became known as Hawking radiation and gradually lose energy. This discovery connected ideas from relativity, quantum theory, and thermodynamics, while also creating new questions such as the black hole information paradox.
Despite being diagnosed with motor neurone disease in his early twenties, Hawking continued working for more than five decades. His 1988 book A Brief History of Time brought complex ideas about the Big Bang, time, black holes, and the structure of the universe to millions of readers around the world.
Hawking’s greatest legacy lies in both his scientific work and his ability to make enormous questions feel accessible. He showed that science advances not only through answers, but through the courage to keep asking what lies beyond the limits of current understanding.
