 The narrator relates his first night in the town of Sokvaapit, and a typical evening at the communal hall, known as an "Eubliaska." He listens to the very eldest members of the community tell their memories of the aftermath of the greatest conflict in history, stories that as far as he knows are no longer remembered or at least told anywhere outside the Shelflands. He hears stories from the time after the cataclysmic event that ended the greatest war in history, and the returning of the displaced to their homelands. He also speaks of knowledge that may mean his ruin, and of his desire to meet an order known as the Grey Scribes who are believed to dwell in the mountains beyond the city of Ruerdskyeg, his expedition's destination and the old capital of the High Shelves.
