Season 3 Companion Episode: Character with Andy Bauer
In this companion episode of Trail Talk – Leading the Scouting Adventure, Mr. Mielke is joined by longtime friend Andy Bauer for a relaxed conversation connected to Season 3, Episode 2: The Character Factory.
Craig and Andy look back on shared roots in South Bend, Indiana, including Cub Scouts in Pack 415, marching band, first jobs at Martin’s Supermarket, Purdue, and the local connection to the movie Rudy. From there, the conversation turns toward Scouting’s first Aim: character.
Andy shares his perspective as a parent, volunteer, and troop treasurer, including what he has seen through both boy troops and girl troops, and how each of his children has walked a different trail through Scouting. Together, they reflect on the idea that character is not built through lectures alone, but through real experiences: showing up, taking responsibility, stepping back, making mistakes, and learning to contribute even when you are not the star.
This episode is about friendship, parenting, Scouting, and the quiet ways young people grow when adults give them room to practice responsibility.
Thanks for hiking along.
