Episode 4: Gerard Whateley

Gerard Whateley comes alive when the mic is on but whether he is calling a horserace, covering an Olympics or calling a footy game, he is powered by preparation and just a few nerves, as he says “the nerves show you that it means something to you.” Gerard’s love for sports broadcasting and writing goes back to when he was 13 years old and met his idol and inspiration, horseracing writer Les Carlyon. Since then, he has dedicated his career to that very pursuit, these days as chief sports caller and host of the Whateley program on SEN, co-host of Foxy Footy’s AFL 360 and occasional columnist for the Herald Sun. But dig a little deeper and you will find that Gerard has had his fair brush with Hollywood fame, and the people who inspire him most are found away from the media’s gaze.
