    • Serving Up Community: Asylum Link's Recipe For Belonging
      Mar 15 2024

In this heartwarming episode of "Refuge and Resilience," we take you on an intimate journey through the daily lives of those who find solace and community within Asylum Link in Merseyside.

Starting in the bustling kitchens where volunteers, led by Ruth, prepare meals for up to 200 people daily, we explore the universal language of food and its power to bring people together. Ruth shares her passion for cooking and how the kitchen has become a place of warmth and welcome for asylum seekers and volunteers alike.

Away from the kitchens, we step into the English classes where hope and determination fill the air. Asylum seekers of varying levels diligently work to overcome language barriers, a crucial step towards building a new life in the UK. Through the voices of students and volunteers, we learn about the challenges and triumphs of learning English as a means of integration and independence.

The episode culminates in the vibrant board games club, a testament to the resilience and camaraderie among the centre's visitors. Here, language barriers fall away as chess pieces move and Jenga blocks teeter. Ernie, a volunteer, shares how games have fostered connections and friendships, creating a supportive community for those far from home.

Join us for a mosaic of stories that highlight the strength found in community and the simple yet profound ways in which we can support each other.

      Here are the highlights:

(02:20) Serving up more than food

      (08:46) Learning the language

      (18:07) Building bridges and towers
