“I love my work and I love the horses. I envision a day when those people who really understand how to care for a horse - from their hooves and diet to their need to live in a herd and be free from confinement - will be the majority of those responsible for these creatures. We need to throw out the molasses-laden feeds and supplements, get rid of the alfalfa, remove the shoes, trim them properly and allow it to run with others of their species. It is all so simple and yet it is a battle we fight daily due to the contradictory practices used in traditional horsekeeping.”

    From Ashleigh’s website

“Many experienced riders begin to focus on the exercises or patterns, and, if they feel they are stagnating in their progress, start to look for more elaborate, complicated exercises. My approach to teaching is bringing the focus back to the rider’s position, biomechanics and awareness.

Horses constantly give us feedback on how we are organised and balanced while riding, and by tuning in and becoming aware, we can pick up on the horse’s signals and respond to them, becoming more efficient riders. Through auditory, visual and kinaesthetic cues and exercises, my methodology will help you rewire stubborn patterns.

If you are an instructor you might also feel that you hit a plateau with your students. For many years I have assisted fellow teachers in how to delve deeper into biomechanics, proprioception and spatial awareness to help their riders progress. “

    Send us a text

Steph Bradshaw is a positive reinforcement & force free, ethical equestrian coach and trainer living in Missouri.

In part 1 of our discussion Steph begins by sharing her childhood and college experiences with horses and animal training. She explains what she learned about positive reinforcement working with zoo animals, her start with horse rescue, and what she learned from working with a truly dangerous equine rescue case.

Her work with rescue allows her to explore positive reinforcement with a large range of behaviors that the rescue horses present. She uses the four R’s of Trauma informed training. (Realization of trauma, Recognition of signs, Response System, Resisting retraumatization.)

We discuss the interdisciplinary trauma that happens within the horse industry as commentary, critique and judgement between disciplines is batted back and forth.
And the benefits of a “lazy” (efficient) positive reinforcement training style.
