Good nutrition and exercise can help people stay strong and live longer. As we get older, our muscles tend to get weaker and we can become more at risk for illness. Eating protein and lifting weights (resistance exercise) are two powerful tools to keep the body healthy during aging. Scientists have studied how much protein to eat, when to eat it, and the role of a special amino acid called leucine, especially in older adults. They also looked at big surveys of people’s diets (like NHANES in the US) and clinical trials where seniors took protein supplements. This article explains what research tells us about protein and weight training, and how they work together to affect our chances of living longer and staying disease-free.
