The Orriona's FTL drive bends reality around them, the star field transformed into rolling veils of purple-green energy. Kai occupies the gunner's station, posture deceptively relaxed. Kellan studies him through the viewport's reflection, thinking about the personnel files Orriona provided.

Everyone else's file held the usual details—homeworld, family, education. Kai's was conspicuously thin. Parents unnamed. Origins vague. Just Edgepoint Station listed under recent residence.

During their shared meal, Kai had told stories of the station's underbelly with an easy smile. But Kellan knows how to read between the lines. Those years had cost him something.

Kellan grew up with family—difficult at times, but present. Kai's history suggests long stretches of survival alone, the kind that teaches a person to rely on no one but himself.
