The Mead of Poetry – Odin, Kvasir, and the Hidden Source of Inspiration

In this episode, I explore the Norse myth of Odin and the Mead of Poetry: how divine inspiration comes into being, how it is hidden, guarded, transformed, and finally released into the world.

The story begins with Kvasir, born from the reconciliation of the Æsir and the Vanir — a being formed from shared substance, embodying distilled wisdom. After his death, his blood is mixed with honey by the dwarves, creating the mead that grants poetic insight and inspired speech.

This mead passes into the hands of the giant Suttung, who hides it deep within a mountain, guarded by his daughter Gunnlöð. Odin does not seize it by force, but reaches it through patience, labor, transformation, and risk — drilling into the mountain, entering through a narrow opening, and escaping at great cost.

The episode reflects on the meanings of key names and objects in the myth — Kvasir, Óðrerir, the mountain, the drill, the act of guarding — and reads the mead not as intoxication, but as concentrated insight: inspiration that demands effort, responsibility, and discernment.

Alongside the Norse material, I briefly touch on a parallel current in Greek mythology — Aquarius and Ganymede, the divine cup-bearer — not as a direct equivalence, but as an ancient resonance: different cultures circling the same question of how divine insight is carried, poured out, and made accessible to the world.

This is not a moral tale, but a myth of transmission:
how wisdom is formed,
why it is hidden,
and what it costs to bring it into speech.

De Dichtersmede – Odin en de Verborgen Bron van Inspiratie

In deze aflevering onderzoek ik de Noordse mythe van Odin en de dichtersmede: het ontstaan van inspiratie, hoe zij wordt gevormd, verborgen, bewaakt en uiteindelijk in de wereld wordt gebracht.

Het verhaal begint bij Kvasir, ontstaan uit de verzoening tussen de Asen en de Wanen — een wezen dat belichaamde wijsheid is, samengeperst uit gedeelde substantie. Na zijn dood mengen de dwergen zijn bloed met honing en brouwen zo de mede die poëtisch inzicht en geïnspireerde spraak schenkt.

De mede komt in handen van de reus Suttung, die haar diep in een berg verbergt, bewaakt door zijn dochter Gunnlöð. Odin verkrijgt haar niet door geweld, maar via arbeid, omwegen, transformatie en risico — door de berg te doorboren, door een smalle opening binnen te gaan, en te ontsnappen met verlies.

In deze aflevering sta ik stil bij de betekenis van namen en handelingen in de mythe — Kvasir, Óðrerir, de berg, de boor, het bewaken — en lees ik de mede niet als bedwelming, maar als geconcentreerd inzicht: inspiratie die inspanning, verantwoordelijkheid en onderscheidingsvermogen vraagt.

Daarnaast raak ik kort aan een verwante stroom in de Griekse mythologie — Aquarius en Ganymedes, de goddelijke schenker — niet als gelijkstelling, maar als resonantie: verschillende culturen die dezelfde vraag onderzoeken naar hoe goddelijk inzicht wordt gedragen, uitgeschonken en toegankelijk gemaakt.

Dit is geen moreel verhaal, maar een mythe over overdracht:
hoe wijsheid ontstaat,
waarom zij verborgen wordt,
en wat het kost om haar tot spreken te brengen.
