    Feb 23 2026

In 1898 Joshua Slocum completed the first single-handed circumnavigation of the globe. His account of the three-year, 46,000-mile adventure, Sailing Alone Around the World, became an instant classic that has remained in print ever since. A decade later, he set out for the Amazon and was lost at sea.

In Captain Solitude: One Surfer's Search for the World's Greatest Sailor, his fellow Nova Scotian, RC Shaw, sets out on a solo journey of his own:

to cycle and surf his way through Bluenose country, to Slocum’s childhood home of Brier Island.

Wild camping, avoiding bears, and with his trusty surfboard strapped to his cargo bike, he chases waves, encounters the ghosts of maritime history, and contemplates the spirit of adventure that drives us to explore beyond the ordinary.

Join Ryan and Red as they discuss high stakes fun, and the enduring power of literature to inspire people to explore their boundaries.

  • Mark Billingham
    Feb 2 2026

With global sales figures of over six and a half million books, Mark Billingham is one of the most successful, and critically acclaimed, crime writers in the business.

His Tom Thorne series has kept readers gripped for quarter of a century, with a combination of gritty realism, psychological depth, and consummate plotting.

The 18th book in the series, What the Night Brings, sees DI Thorne investigating a cop-killer who appears to be feeding off a loss of faith in London’s Metropolitan Police – the very force Thorne has devoted his life to serve.

And the cherry on the cake for those of us reading the audiobook is that What the Night Brings is narrated by Mark Billingham himself.

Join Mark and Red as they discuss the importance of character, humour and empathy in detective fiction, and Mark’s role as rhythm guitarist in The Fun Lovin’ Crime Writers.

  • Michael Sheridan
    Jan 19 2026

Michael Sheridan is a veteran foreign correspondent with over two decades experience reporting on Chinese affairs. His latest book, The Red Emperor: Xi Jinping and His New China, takes the reader from the impoverished, pariah state of Xi's youth in the 1950s to the military and economic superpower of today.

The son of one of Chairman Mao’s right-hand men, the young Xi was cast into exile when his father fell from grace and has fought his way back to the top through guile, privilege and rigid adherence to Communist dogma.

The portrait that emerges is of an absolute ruler in charge of a ruthless techno-security state, where super-rich family mafias vie for power amid murder, corruption and sex scandals.

Join Michael and Red as they explore Xi’s seemingly inexorable rise to power, his strengths, weaknesses and the legacy he might leave.
