Shauna from Cinema of Screams & I were in a knockdown dragout fight over a bag of Doritos outside my favorite Aldi when we started to realize that her visit to Chicago had gone a bit off the rails, and the whole ugly situation was in need of a complete top-to-bottom reappraisal. Perhaps mine was not the calming influence she was in need of, or indeed looking for. In a moment of divine intervention, we noticed an ad on the Doritos bag for a horror film festival @ The Music Box featuring a complete franchise run of the operatic cosmic romance body horror featuring a face that was never supposed to be, a title that arrived last minute, a DS9 mainstay, a super realistic filleted rat, and a deadass dude fucking his sister-in-law while wearing the skin of his recently murdered brother- Hellraiser. No tears please, it's a waste of good suffering. Also the bathrooms at the Music Box don't have enough paper towels. You'll have to grit your teeth as we wail about the amazing gore & makeup effects, wax philosophic about the extra-dimensional implications, wane on & on praising the cast, the style, the design, and whine about the fact that a beloved franchise w/ 11 films & counting has to be stuck w/ only 2 truly great entries. As we swapped popcorn, fun facts, and a shared ice pack, Shauna & I reflected on how rare & special these moments of connection really are. In that moment of trust, she confided in me that while she'd never seen the porn parody, she'd always been curious. I flashed a devilish grin & said, I have such sights to show you...

Felicia Maroni from Seeing Faces in Movies needed discount childcare on extremely short notice due to a sudden emergency. It's a good thing Movies 4 Dayz HQ is conveniently located adjacent to Toronto by way of Chicago so she asked me first. I told her I had no surefire options but that my dog Lady would serve as good a nana to her little one while we took the Shoe Leather Express all around the neighborhood to check in w/ different potential options. What the hell? Between her toddler & my dog, there were certainly enough brain cells in that small apartment to keep them safe up to & including most conceivable lengths of time. If I'm being honest, I had to wonder if Felicia just needed a break from the little apron-puller, if only for a few hours. During that time she discussed her personal fears & trepidations concerning her daughter's upcoming journey thru puberty & into womanhood. I encouraged her to look on the bright side, citing that no matter what happens, it's unlikely her little girl would grow into a furry feral beast w/ the desire to rip everything to bloody pieces. After conceding my point, we shared a bottle of Four Roses at a deserted public park & talked about how much her current distress related to the most amazing indie darling sisterhood werewolf movie to ever come out of the Great White North- Ginger Snaps! Gas up the drug van & load up on wolfsbane cuz these girls are flashing thru puberty w/ fuzzy feral fierceness complete w/ flesh ripping claws & bone crunching jaws giving us one of the most insightful & beautifully realized werewolf flicks to delight gorehounds & film freaks the world over! We howl about the design, lap up all the delicious dialogue, and moon over the litany of lycanthropic thematic implications. As we killed the bourbon & tried texting her toddler, she wondered if the child would be up to the task of picking up another bottle & meeting us at the park. I confessed I didn't know exactly where we were. Felicia said that according to the GPS, we were way out on the corner of Fucked Up & Evil.
