  • The Benefits of HRT - more than just treating hot flushes

When we talk about HRT, the conversation often focuses on the risks. But what about the benefits?

In this episode of Menopause Nurse Memos, I’m looking at how HRT can help women through perimenopause and menopause — not simply by reducing hot flushes and night sweats, but by supporting women’s health and quality of life more broadly.

We’ll talk about how replacing the hormones that are declining during menopause can improve symptoms such as sleep disturbance, anxiety, low mood, brain fog, joint aches, vaginal and urinary symptoms and sexual wellbeing.

We’ll also look beyond symptom control and discuss the longer-term benefits of HRT, including its important role in protecting bone health and reducing the risk of osteoporosis and fractures. For some women, depending on their individual circumstances and when HRT is started, there may also be cardiovascular benefits.

Most importantly, I’ll explain why HRT isn’t a one-size-fits-all treatment. The benefits and risks need to be considered individually, taking into account your age, symptoms, medical and family history, whether you have a uterus, and the type and route of HRT used.

My aim is to help you understand the evidence, separate fact from fear, and feel more informed about your choices.

Because menopause isn’t just about getting through the symptoms — it’s about supporting women to feel well, stay healthy and age well.

  • HRT and the WHI research of 2002

For many women, the words HRT still bring fear — often because of what they heard following the publication of the Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) research in 2002.

In this episode, I take a closer look at what the WHI study actually found, why its early results caused such widespread concern about HRT, and why the headlines that followed did not tell the whole story.

We’ll explore some of the important limitations of the original research, including the age and health profile of many of the women involved, the types and doses of hormones used, and why the findings cannot necessarily be applied to every woman considering HRT today.

I’ll also explain how our understanding of menopausal hormone therapy has evolved, including the importance of the woman’s age, stage of menopause, symptoms, medical history, type and route of HRT, and whether a uterus is present.

HRT isn't a treatment that is right for everyone — but neither is it the dangerous treatment many women were led to believe it was.

For suitable women, started at the right time and prescribed appropriately, HRT can be an important part of managing menopausal symptoms and may also have benefits for bone health and cardiovascular health.

So, if you've been frightened by what you heard about HRT, or you're wondering whether the risks have been exaggerated, this episode aims to give you a clearer, more balanced understanding of the evidence.

Let's put the headlines aside and look at the science.
