  • Heusler phases the new material for the next big thing
    Oct 31 2026

Researchers have intentionally engineered a new Heusler compound to achieve high magnetoresistance, offering potential advancements for electronics and medical sensors. By moving away from complex, multi-layered systems, the design focuses on manipulating the physics of simpler, inexpensive materials.

    Material Engineering and Physics

The engineering process began with a known Heusler compound, Co2CrAl.

Researchers doped the material by swapping a precise amount of chromium for iron.

This substitution tuned the electron count exactly to 27.8 per formula unit.

The team used electronic structure calculations to predictably design the material, targeting a "Van Hove singularity" (a spike in electron states) near the Fermi energy.

The design also features an energy gap in the "minority spin channel" to create a half-metallic ferromagnet capable of filtering electrons by their spin.

    Performance Characteristics

The iron-doped compound demonstrated a 30% change in magnetic resistance at room temperature.

This significant resistance shift was achieved under a highly practical, small magnetic field of only 0.1 Tesla.

In contrast, the original, unmodified Co2CrAl compound showed no effect under the exact same conditions.

The material exhibits an unexpected anisotropic effect, meaning the resistance change depends on the direction of the magnetic field and current.

    Practical Applications and Integration

The compound maintains its magnetic properties in warm environments due to a high Curie temperature of approximately 750 Kelvin.

When tested in an actual device—a spin-valve tunneling junction—the material produced a successful 16% effect at room temperature.

Because the material is an intermetallic compound that contains no oxygen, it bypasses significant manufacturing barriers and is easily integrated with standard silicon chip technology.

  • Die Fibunacci Reihe in Kunst und Natur
    Oct 11 2026

  • Zero Bars, Infinite Reach: The Microscopic Symphony Turning Smartphones into Orbital Beacons
    Oct 9 2026

Terrestrial mobile networks rely on a fragile ground infrastructure vulnerable to storm damage and power outages, but modern smartphones can bypass failed local grids by connecting directly to Low Earth Orbit satellites. Because these fast-moving orbital links face severe Doppler shifts, extreme bandwidth constraints, and signal attenuation through walls and human bodies, devices restrict traffic to vital emergency payloads and require users to aim the handset outdoors. To align a narrow, power-efficient transmission beam, smartphones merge data through real-time sensor fusion: GNSS calculates exact positions and orbital trajectories, an IMU tracks 3D spatial tilt to prevent body shadowing, and a TMR magnetometer filters internal electronic noise to establish an accurate heading toward the satellite. Finally, onboard barometric pressure sensors solve the Z-axis problem by providing critical vertical elevation for rescue teams, establishing a decentralized communication model resilient against both natural disasters and deliberate ground network shutdowns.
