    An der Küste von British Columbia stimmte etwas nicht. Die Fallen für Krabben waren leer. Der Köder war weg.

    Die Haíɫzaqv-Wächter stellten diese Fallen für eine fremde Krabbenart auf, die dort nicht hingehört. Doch jemand zog die Fallen ans Ufer und brach sie auf.

    Zuerst dachten die Wächter an Robben oder an Bären. Um sicher zu sein, stellten sie eine Kamera am Strand auf.

    Schon am nächsten Tag hatten sie ein Bild. Es war der 29. Mai 2024. Und der Dieb war kein Bär.

    Eine Wölfin schwamm vom Ufer aus ins Wasser. Sie nahm die schwimmende Boje ins Maul und trug sie rückwärts an Land.

    Dann kam der clevere Teil. Die Wölfin zog am Seil, das von der Boje nach unten führte. Langsam kam die Falle aus dem Wasser – eine Falle, die sie gar nicht sehen konnte.

    Sie riss die Falle auf und fraß den Fisch darin. Später zeigte die Kamera einen zweiten Wolf, der dasselbe tat.

    Die Forscher staunten. Die Wölfin wusste genau, was sie tat, obwohl der Köder tief unter Wasser lag.

    Ist es der erste Wolf, der ein Werkzeug benutzt? Oder nur ein sehr kluges Tier? Darüber wird noch gestritten.

    ENGLISH:

    On the coast of British Columbia, something was wrong. The crab traps were empty. The bait was gone.

    The Haíɫzaqv Guardians set up these traps to catch a foreign crab species that doesn't belong there. But someone was dragging the traps to shore and breaking them open.

    At first the Guardians thought of seals or bears. To be sure, they set up a camera on the beach.

    The very next day they had a picture. It was May 29, 2024. And the thief was no bear.

    A she-wolf swam out from shore into the water. She took the floating buoy in her mouth and carried it backwards onto land.

    Then came the clever part. The wolf pulled on the rope that led down from the buoy. Slowly the trap came out of the water – a trap she couldn't even see.

    She tore the trap open and ate the fish inside. Later the camera showed a second wolf doing the same thing.

    The researchers were amazed. The she-wolf knew exactly what she was doing, even though the bait lay deep underwater.

    Is it the first wolf to use a tool? Or just a very clever animal? People are still arguing about that.

    Auf Aoshima, einer winzigen Insel in Japan, leben heute etwa achtzig Katzen und nur noch vier Menschen. Alle Bewohner sind alt, und keiner ist jünger als siebzig.

    Aber wie kamen sie dorthin? Und wer versorgt sie heute?

    Vor langer Zeit war Aoshima ein Fischerdorf mit fast neunhundert Einwohnern. Die Fischer brachten Katzen mit, weil Ratten ihre Netze zernagten.

    Dann gingen die Fische zurück, und die jungen Leute zogen aufs Festland. Die Dorfbewohner verschwanden einer nach dem anderen – aber die Katzen blieben und vermehrten sich, bis es über zweihundert waren.

    Zweihundert Katzen, fast keine Menschen: Das wurde zum Problem. Deshalb wurden die Katzen 2018 sterilisiert, und seitdem werden keine Kätzchen mehr geboren. Die etwa achtzig, die noch leben, sind alle alt.

    Naoko, eine Frau in ihren Siebzigern, kümmert sich um sie. Zweimal am Tag bringt sie Futter zur Sammelstelle, und achtzig Katzen rennen ihr entgegen.

    Den kranken Tieren gibt sie Medizin. Wenn eine Katze stirbt, begräbt Naoko sie eigenhändig an einem Ort, den sie geheim hält.

    Sie sagt: „Irgendwann wird es keine Menschen mehr geben und dann auch keine Katzen." Aber bis dahin bleibt sie.

    ENGLISH:

    On Aoshima, a tiny island in Japan, about eighty cats and only four people live today. All residents are old, and none is younger than seventy.

    But how did they get there? And who takes care of them today?

    Long ago, Aoshima was a fishing village with nearly nine hundred inhabitants. The fishermen brought cats because rats were gnawing their nets.

    Then the fish declined, and the young people moved to the mainland. The villagers disappeared one after another – but the cats stayed and multiplied, until there were over two hundred.

    Two hundred cats, almost no people: that became a problem. So in 2018 the cats were sterilized, and since then no more kittens are born. The roughly eighty that still live are all old.

    Naoko, a woman in her seventies, takes care of them. Twice a day she brings food to the feeding spot, and eighty cats come running toward her.

    The sick animals she gives medicine. When a cat dies, Naoko buries it herself in a place she keeps secret.

    She says: "Someday there will be no people left and then no cats either." But until then, she stays.

    Ein Mann setzt sich an einem warmen Abend auf einen Schwimmring und schließt die Augen. Als er sie wieder öffnet, ist er in einem anderen Land.

    Es ist der 3. August 2026. Der 54-jährige Serbe sitzt auf seinem Schwimmring in der Donau, nahe der Stadt Donji Milanovac. Das Wasser ist warm, und er schläft ein.

    Aber die Strömung schläft nicht. Sie trägt ihn langsam flussabwärts, durch eine tiefe Schlucht zwischen Bergen – das Eiserne Tor.

    Hier ist die Donau nicht nur ein Fluss. Sie ist die Grenze der Europäischen Union. Serbien liegt außerhalb, Rumänien liegt innerhalb der EU.

    Als der Mann aufwacht, ist es fast dunkel. Er erkennt nichts mehr und ruft laut um Hilfe. Um 20:40 Uhr geht ein Notruf unter der Nummer 112 ein.

    Die Grenzpolizei von Svinița ist schon auf dem Wasser – sie sucht jede Nacht nach illegalen Booten. Aber heute findet sie kein Schmuggler-Boot, sondern einen verschlafenen Mann auf einem Schwimmring.

    Die Polizisten nehmen ihn an Bord, und Sanitäter bringen ihn ins Krankenhaus. Er ist nicht in Gefahr. Ein paar Stunden später bringen die Behörden ihn zurück nach Serbien.

    Andere Menschen brauchen einen Reisepass und ein Visum für diesen Weg in die EU. Er hat es schlafend geschafft – auf einem aufblasbaren Ring.

    ENGLISH:

    A man sits on a swim ring on a warm evening and closes his eyes. When he opens them again, he is in another country.

    It is 3 August 2026. The 54-year-old Serbian man is sitting on his swim ring in the Danube, near the town of Donji Milanovac. The water is warm, and he falls asleep.

    But the current doesn't sleep. It carries him slowly downstream, through a deep gorge between mountains — the Iron Gates.

    Here the Danube is not just a river. It is the border of the European Union. Serbia lies outside, Romania lies inside the EU.

    When the man wakes up, it is almost dark. He doesn't recognize anything and calls loudly for help. At 8:40 PM, an emergency call reaches 112.

    The border police from Svinița are already on the water — they search every night for illegal boats. But tonight they don't find a smuggler's boat, just a sleepy man on a swim ring.

    The officers take him aboard, and paramedics bring him to the hospital. He is not in danger. A few hours later, the authorities bring him back to Serbia.

    Other people need a passport and a visa for this route into the EU. He managed it asleep — on an inflatable ring.
