  • Who Are You Trying to Become? (IDOLS - Part 7)
    Oct 27 2026

If you were a kid in the early 90s, you probably remember a basketball court full of kids and a Gatorade commercial built around one idea: wanting to be like Mike. Most of us outgrow the song, but the longing to become someone else follows us into adulthood. It might be a pastor you admire, a parent who seems to have it all together, a creator with millions of followers, or the version of ourselves everyone expects to see. Little by little, admiration slips into imitation, and imitation can slip into worship.

In this final message of our IDOLS series, we look at the idol of idols, the personas we take on that lead us away from the Person God gave us to follow. We walk through Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego refusing a golden image in Daniel 3, the early Christians who were pressed to honour Caesar's image, and the pop stars, athletes, and influencers who draw that same kind of devotion today. A persona is the idolized image of who we think we have to be or should be.

Then we land on Philippians 2:9-11, where Paul tells us God gave Jesus the name above every name, so that every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord. Colossians 1:15 calls Jesus the image of the invisible God. He let go of what was rightfully His, and the Father lifted Him up. No persona we chase will ever stand beside that.

We also name three places a persona takes root: identity, security, and belonging. A persona is only as strong as our ability to keep it up, and when it cracks, everything we built on it shakes. If you're tired of performing, if you're worn out keeping the image up as the best teacher, parent, or leader, or if you've been hiding the real you, Jesus offers an identity, a security, and a belonging that can't crack.

Watch the full message, and if it helps you, subscribe so you don't miss the next one. Then tell us in the comments who or what you've been tempted to become. We'd love to hear your story. You can find more teaching and resources for leaders and everyday Christians at LeadBiblically.com.

  • When the Pleasures of Life Replace God (IDOLS - Part 6)
    Oct 22 2026

Ever notice how the second slice of pie never quite hits like the first? That's not in your head. God built a reward system into every one of us, and it's a gift. But most of us know the quiet tug of one more scroll, one more episode, one more meal, and somewhere along the way the thing we enjoy starts running the show.

In this message from week 7 of our IDOLS series, I walk through the Idol of Pleasure. Paul warns Timothy about people who are "lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power" (2 Timothy 3:4b-5, ESV). Then we sit with Jesus' warning about the thorns in Luke 8:14, hear how Stanford psychiatrist Dr. Anna Lembke describes the way our brains level out pleasure, and picture it like a playground teeter totter.

God designed this system to keep us moving. In the Garden of Eden, every pleasure would have led us right back to the One who gave it. Sin infected that, and now the enemy whispers that one more hit will finally satisfy us. Each time it lasts a little less, and the craving starts to steal our attention and our affection. That's where pleasure turns into misplaced worship.

We also look at the three places this idol takes root: identity, security, and belonging. You'll hear a simple 7-day test for loosening pleasure's grip, Paul's guardrail in 1 Corinthians 6:12, and the vivid picture of too much honey in Proverbs 25:16. And because trying harder won't break the cycle, we finish at the cross with a prayer you can pray right where you are.

If you've ever wondered why more never seems to be enough, this message is for you. Grab a coffee, settle in, and let's walk through it together. If it hits close to home, don't run from it. Watch the full message, then tell me in the comments which pleasure you reach for most often and why. • Worshipping Nature Without Knowing It (IDOLS - Part 5)
    Oct 5 2026

Some of the people who love creation the most have no idea they're worshipping it.

One morning on a beach in Florida, I found dozens of dead fish with every eye missing. Something built into those seabirds had done the work, and it sent my eyes looking up. We walk the same line when we stand on a summit or watch the northern lights dance. The wonder is real. The question is where it lands.

In Romans 1:25, Paul says people "exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen." (Romans 1:25 ESV) https://www.bible.com/bible/59/ROM.1.25.ESV

In this message from our IDOLS series, we look at the idol of creation. We walk through 8 ways people offer praise and thanks to created things today, from manifesting to the universe to calling the planet Mother Earth. Then we ask the harder question. How does a Christian slip into it? It tends to show up in the same three places every idol does: identity, security, and belonging. A trophy hunt that tells us who we are. A week at the cabin that becomes our spiritual reset. A trail we call our church. A love for the planet that outweighs our love for people. None of those things are bad on their own. They become a problem when a good gift starts doing a job that only God can do.

And at the centre of it all stands Jesus. Colossians 1:15 to 20 tells us the One who made every mountain, forest, and river stepped into creation and gave His life to bring us back. If you've never trusted Him, this message closes with a simple invitation and a prayer you can pray right where you are.

Marvel at the mountains, and worship the Maker.

If this message spoke to you, watch it all the way through and share it with someone who loves the outdoors. Subscribe so you don't miss the rest of the series. I'd love to hear from you in the comments. Where do you feel closest to God, and who do you thank when you're there?
