LAURA GOODWIN is a scientist, a swimming coach, a mom and an open water swimmer that is planning on crossing the English Channel between July 12-19 2022. The English Channel separates England and France and is at its narrowest between Dover and Calais. This iconic unassisted swimming marathon expands over 33 km (or 21 miles) in cold water (10 to 16C), high current, unpredictable weather and through one of the busiest seaway in the world.       MICHAEL J. TIPTON is professor in Human & Applied Physiology, Extreme Environments Laboratory, School of Sport, Health & Exercise Science, Faculty of Science, University of Portsmouth, UK*. With co-author Frank Golden M.D., Ph.D., he has wrote the book 'Essentials of Sea Survival'**. He is also Editor-in-Chief of the scientific journal Experimental Physiology and a Fellow of the Physiological Society. His Extreme Environments Laboratory examines the physiological, pathophysiological and psychological responses to adverse environments and the selection, preparation and protection of those who enter such environments. His projects have been with the Energy industry, Ministry of Defence, Royal National Lifeboat Institution, US Coastguard, Office of the Deputy Prime Minister, MRC, Health & Safety Executive, UK Sport and WL Gore and other Industries. His laboratory has been the designated thermal laboratory for both UKSport and the Fuch’s Foundation. Over the year, Dr Tipton has supervised over 35 students for postgraduate qualifications. Advised a range of external organisations (media to emergency services) in the area of thermal physiology and have acted on numerous occasions as an expert witness in relevant legal cases. He has over 350 medias appearances notably on The Life Scientific for the BBC**. Over 700 publications and medico-legal reports in the field of environmental and occupational  medicine, physiology and psychology (available on request).
