Just like fame, beauty costs. And here's where you start paying! Kim and Em are fascinated with the recent slew of Beauty Horror gracing our screens, often (but not always) directed by women seeking to reflect, comment on, and rebel against unattainable beauty standards.

These are standards which are increasingly becoming the normal way to achieve validation as well as financial success. Kinda depressing right?! But is this a new thing? Kim and Em delve into the historical roots of the pursuit of perfection citing key films The Ugly Stepsister (2025) and The Neon Demon (2016) as they attempt to spotlight the villains, get to grips with the evil that makes the characters do what they do, and show how this raises a mirror to our own lives. Inspired by Ryan Murphy's recent hot! hot! hot! series,The Beauty, Booth and Taylor-Foster discuss the emergence of a nascent subgenre in Horror. The subgenre in question? The aptly named 'Beauty Horror'. That's what we're calling it for now, at least.

Our obsession with youth and beauty might not be new, and neither is its exploration on the screen, but we've certainly seen a surge in horror movies over the past few years positioning the topic front and centre. Nicolas Winding Refn's stylish 2016 shockerThe Neon Demon, Coralie Fargeat's decorated The Substance from 2024, last year's stunningly grotesque debut from new Norwegian talent Emilie Blichfeldt, The Ugly Stepsister, and now, of course, The Beauty.

But why now? The ladies ride the somewhat slippery slope of gender politics, feminism, and beauty standards in an attempt to provide a meaty, visceral, honest, and intriguing look into our love/ hate relationship with beauty and how it has shaped cinematic history. Expect the usual highly intelligent conversation splattered with ridiculous humour – you'll find out exactly why Booth just loves the word MULCH.

Embodied by the magnificent Jacob Elordi in this Guillermo Del Toro adaptation, we explore the subtle and not-so-subtle nuances driving the evil motivations in this sumptuous gothic classic.

Kim & Em get festive this week with their favourite little (sometimes) green men; Gremlins! They're also joined by Gizmo himself so expect a LOT of singing and the odd Mogwai impression... The gore girls delve into everything from the real Chinese origin story of the Mogwai, to Roald Dahls' surprising involvement to the social commentary hidden deeper within the film. Joe Dante's 1984 Christmas Horror Film is an absolute classic and hugely entertaining but there's always stories and trivia the girls dig out that you may never have heard! So join us as we get attacked by Xmas trees (literally) and go gooey eyed (almost literally) over Gizmo. Remember everyone A Mogwai is not JUST for Christmas!

Slicing and dicing is the order of the day as our intrepid duo Kim & Em take a gory summer-vacay sojourn to Camp Blood to interrogate villainy in the original Friday the 13th. Tackling teenage sex and slasher movie no-nos, this finger-wagging horror movie helped cement the rules for "Don't" flicks and the stalk and slash pic, and Kim & Em take a dive into Crystal Lake to rummage around at the bottom for what – about an hour? – dredging the sludgy fare that birthed a horror movie icon in Jason Voorhees. But, as everyone knows, he wasn't the OG source of evil in the franchise. Emily and Kim look at monstrous mothers, "murky" morals, and more as they discuss this classic that spawned – to date – TEN sequels and a reboot. Don't go outside – and DON'T listen to this podcast!
