But since the Coronavirus Pandemic began it smashed the illusion of gender equality. When the infection rates began to rise back in March 2020, unemployment levels for women in the UK rose by 174,000 since the start of the Pandemic, an increase of 28%. In the previous episode our reporter Bethany Noon spoken to three young feminists’ and outlined the pros and cons about being a feminist activist. However, the world’s most powerful woman is the backbone of the 27-member European Union and carries the fate of the euro on her shoulders. This famous woman is, Angela Merkel a German politician and former research scientist, who has been the Chancellor of Germany since 2005. She is the first woman to hold a public European office. In this latest episode of Illuminating the Fight for our Rights our reporter Bethany Noon finds out is it wrong to have powerful politically minded women today?

Feminism is a range of socio-political movements that aim to define and establish the political, economic, personal, and social equality of the sexes. One of the well-known movements from these ideologies was the Suffragettes. Now the Suffragettes, were members of women’s organisations in the late 19th century and early 20th century who, under the famous banner “Votes for Women”, fought for a woman’s right to vote. Feminist movements, like #ReclaimTheStreets seen today have campaigned and continue to campaign for women's rights. In this first episode of ‘Illuminating the Fight for our Rights’, our reporter Bethany Noon looks at the effect of feminist activism has on young females in the UK.
