 June 2022, just outside Pine Bluff, Arkansas. I was driving through on a cross-country move when my engine gave out around midnight. The Sundown Motel was the only place with a vacancy sign still buzzing. The clerk was a man named Earl who smelled like burnt coffee and old cigarettes. He handed me room 14 without looking up, said the key sticks but you have to jiggle it just right. The lock was fine. What wasn't fine was the light in the parking lot — how it flickered in a pattern I couldn't ignore. Three short, three long, three short. Over and over until I started counting. And then I started seeing shadows that didn't match the people casting them. By the third night I knew I wasn't the only one trapped there. This is what I found out about the Sundown Motel and the people who check in but never leave.
