And western areas are already getting hammered. In the next 24 hours. Western Montana takes the brunt this morning. Rain and snow mixing through 6 A.M., then easing off. You'll hit 46 degrees today before dropping back to 30 tonight with lingering showers. Friday brings relief — partly sunny and 45. Central Montana gets the same messy mix. Rain and snow all day with winds gusting to 18 miles an hour. High of 45, low of 28 tonight. Snow tapers Friday as you climb to 48. Eastern Montana stays a touch warmer. Rain holds off until after 9 A.M., then moves in for a high near 52. Tonight's the kicker — rain flips to snow as temperatures crash to 30. Friday hits 51 with just a slight chance of morning flurries. Mountain travelers, listen up. Winter Storm Warning for the Gallatin and Madison ranges until 3 P.M. Below 7000 feet? Four to nine inches. On the peaks? Up to 16 inches. Plan your routes accordingly. For the weekend. Temperatures surge into the upper 50s, even 60s by Sunday. We're sitting at 43 degrees under overcast skies right now, but a Pacific cold front is slicing through the Northern Rockies as we speak. By morning, winter makes a brief comeback. In the next 24 hours. Western Montana gets the first hit tonight. Rain develops this evening with snow levels crashing to around 3,000 feet by morning. You'll drop to a low of 34 degrees. Thursday keeps things interesting with a rain and snow mix throughout the day, topping out near 46 degrees. Central Montana sees rain rolling in overnight. Expect a low around 33 degrees as the wet stuff moves in. That rain transitions to snow by Thursday morning. Highs reach near 47 degrees, but gusts up to 22 miles an hour will make it feel raw. Eastern Montana holds onto the dry weather longest. Tonight brings mostly cloudy skies with a low near 37 degrees. Rain showers hold off until after 8 A.M. Thursday. You'll see the warmest temperatures in the state, hitting near 50 degrees. Heads up if you're traveling south. Winter Weather Advisories cover the Ruby Mountains and Southern Beaverhead Mountains through 9 A.M. Thursday. Two to four inches of snow combined with gusts to 40 miles an hour will make travel tricky over Monida Pass. Looking ahead, the weekend takes a sharp turn. Highs surge into the upper 50s and even 60s — that's running 15 to 20 degrees above normal for early March. But it comes with a price. Eastern Montana is basking in 65 degrees under mostly sunny skies. That's nearly 20 degrees above normal for early March. Meanwhile. Western Montana sits at 50 degrees with rain falling and a likely soak continuing through the day. Down in Central Montana, you're in the middle at 59 degrees under mostly cloudy skies. Southwest winds gusting to 20 miles an hour keep things breezy. In the next 24 hours. Tonight, the divide sharpens. Eastern Montana stays mild with a low of 37 degrees. But rain moves in after 4 A.M. Ahead of a cold front. Central Montana sees rain developing by evening, mixing with snow overnight as temperatures drop to 34. Out west, that rain transitions to a rain-snow mix with a low of 34. Thursday brings cooler air statewide. Eastern Montana drops to 51 degrees with rain likely. Central Montana hits 48 with rain and snow mixing. Western Montana stays at 45 with continued rain and snow showers. A Winter Weather Advisory kicks in at 3 P.M. Today for Northwest Beaverhead County. Expect 3 to 6 inches of snow at pass level, with gusts to 35 miles an hour. Travel over Homestake and Lost Trail Passes could get tricky after sunset. Looking ahead. Friday clears out with highs near 50. The weekend turns warm and windy. Sunday could hit 68 degrees in the east, but gusts may exceed 50 miles an hour.
