  • Machteld van der Gaag: The one with the International English!
    Feb 27 2026
In ep 162 of “How Do You Say That?!” sponsored by britishvoiceover.co.uk, Machteld van der Gaag joins Sam and Mark from Amsterdam to talk about International English - it's not British, it's not American - but what is it... and is it possible to really nail it? We create a masterclass in what NOT to do! We look at how voicing a corporate script to pictures can lead to so odd sentence breaks... and how to manifest the work you want! Our VO question this week is all about the types of work we're booked for, and whether it's the work we want to be doing!Get involved! Have you got a Wildcard suggestion that we should try or an idea for the show? Send it to us via Mark or Sam's social media or email it directly to podcast@britishvoiceover.co.ukScript 1To help prevent future sciatica pain, Carl works on building strength in his core and back. Strong muscles help stabilise the body and the act of building muscles is in many ways a neural activity. You probably associate exercise with your muscles or heart but recent studies have shown that when we lift weights our nervous system actually gets stronger before our biceps. Working out increases neurons in certain parts of the brain.Script 2You could be forgiven for thinking the maritime industry is a woman’s worldWe refer to ships as sheThey are named by lady sponsorsThey sail upon a sea often thought of as a motherBut let’s be honestThe maritime world may still seem a male-dominated oneAnd that is a shame. We want to work with the most talented, hardworking peopleQualities that do not recognise the boundaries of genderSo if we want to be the best at what we doWe need to be open to everyoneWe'd love your feedback - and if you listen on Apple Podcasts or Spotify, hit the follow button today!**Listen to all of our podcasts here - you can also watch on YouTube, or say to your smart speaker "Play How Do You Say That?!"About our guest: Machteld van der Gaag has been a voice actor for over 30 years! She’s trilingual - her mother tongue is Dutch, her birth language is French and her adolescent language is English! She is based in Amsterdam - and a former copywriter. Machteld works across lots of VoiceOver genres: from web-video’s, commercials and IVR - to elearning, audiotours and audiobooks. • Caroline Ramsay: The one with the Darkness to Speed Ratio!
    Feb 20 2026

In ep 161 of “How Do You Say That?!” sponsored by britishvoiceover.co.uk, Caroline Ramsay joins Sam and Mark to talk about how big BIG actually is, when a client wants a football promo. It leads us to ask the age old question "Is the client always right?". We explore how your smart speaker is always listening to you, and look at how taking the tempo down by 50% gives a very creepy impression. There's a nasty slimy fun fact, the most comfy way to watch TV, and a food that we all loathe! Plus the wildcards include a tragic shakespearean lover, a germophobe, and the style of those sensual M&S adverts!

Our VO question this week is all about how you keep sane and in contact with real people if you transition from being a stage or screen actor to a voice actor, all alone in your booth!

    Script 1

Consider a scenario where you want to start working out. You download a home workout app, buy equipment, the right shoes and more. You suddenly start seeing adverts about health and fitness every time you go online. This is because most of your online actions are tracked, stored and used by advertisers to push their products. While targeted advertising can be personally helpful, sometimes it is not as innocent as it may seem. It may feel like you are being watched, and you are.

    Script 2

    THERY’RE NOT JUST CITIES

    INSPIRING THE UNTHINKABLE

    THEY IGNITE PASSION

    THEY WITNESS OUR GLORY

BRINGING TOGETHER HISTORY AND NEW STORIES

    THEY PULSE WITH UNIQUE ENERGY

    FROM CATWALKS TO STADIUMS

THEY BURN WITH THE SAME, BOLD SPIRIT

    Feb 13 2026

In ep 160 of “How Do You Say That?!” sponsored by britishvoiceover.co.uk, Richie Tavake joins Sam and Mark to talk about the differences between the US and UK radio commercial market and why sometimes an American script can sound cheesey in a British accent. We get savvy and become a consumer champion, and we explore ways to research scripts that you may not have thought of before. Our wildcards see us getting ecstaticly happy, very judgy and absolutely huge in stature.

Our VO question this week is all about the different processes we go through when a script lands in our inbox.

We're totally independent and we don't accept freebies from anyone. We have no owners, shareholders or government departments to answer to, so we work entirely for you, the consumer - and nobody else.

    About our guest:

Richie is an actor from San Francisco, CA. He started in theatre when he was still a teenager and then decided to go into voice-over work - mainly because he was such a big fan of anime and video games. From there he found a real fascination with commercials and audio dramas.

Richie is known for always being a little too early - to work, events, meetings… everything - to the point that people jokingly ask him if he can be late for once.. He also loves playing chess.

  • Mike Paine: The one with the Controlled Chaos!
    Feb 6 2026

In ep 159 of “How Do You Say That?!” sponsored by britishvoiceover.co.uk, Mike Paine joins Sam and Mark from Chicago to talk about how to approach a local market US radio commercial, switching between a serious cyber security narrator and a cartoon boss character, getting your lips round a droopy loopy tongue twister and which choices you make if you're asked to create a character on the fly. In the wildcards we find out what would happen if William Shatner auditioned as a Principal ballet dancer, or if film noir became sexy, or if your school crossing lady really was cross!

Our VO question this week is all about advice and top tips for new entrants into the voice acting community.

    Script 1

    Narrator:

Cross-Site Scripting or XSS is what happens when a hacker manages to inject malicious javascript into your webpage.

Gruff Boss presentation to the board:

Think micro-scalable, robust. We practically invented the term "mega-next-generation, 24/7 global R&D".... err, what's happened here?

    Narrator:

If you don’t escape, or encode-out the javascript, then the browser will execute it as though you put it into your website.

    Script 2

Chattanooga… get ready. Something BIG is dropping. Actually… looping. Dropping AND looping. We don’t know how it works either, but it sounds cool.

Introducing Chatt Droploop — the delivery app you didn’t know you needed, but now won’t be able to live without.

Groceries? We loop it. Late-night snacks? Loop it. Forgot your wig at home and you at an event? Girl… we DEFINITELY loop that.
