Judas betrays Jesus with a kiss, yet Jesus calls him “friend” and loves him to the end, showing us a heart that loves without regret. In Mark 14:43-65, we see how many of us protect our hearts out of a misunderstanding of grace, thinking love is earned instead of given. Only when we see Jesus, fully knowing us and fully loving us, with his arms open on the cross, can we open our hearts to love others the same way.

In Gethsemane, Jesus wrestles over the cup of God’s wrath while his closest friends fall asleep, showing us that what we contribute to our salvation is sin and resistance. Or denial and a nap…This truth helps us learn that letting go of self-reliance and pride is the most freeing thing we can do, and we can do it because Jesus didn’t abandon us in his darkness.

In Mark 14, Jesus shares the Passover meal with his disciples, and we see two ways to become clean and whole: the Old Covenant, where we provide the sacrifice, and the New Covenant, where God does. Living under the law is like trying to rake every leaf out of the yard, but Jesus is the Passover Lamb, offered once for all. The gospel tells us that the only clean and whole person at the table is the very one who qualifies us to sit there.
