What Is Heart Coherence?
Heart coherence is a state in which your heart, mind, and emotions are in harmonious alignment. It’s a measurable, physiological state where the heart rhythm becomes smooth and ordered, reflecting a balanced nervous system and emotional regulation.
In a state of coherence:
- The heart rate variability (HRV) becomes rhythmic and stable.
- The sympathetic (fight/flight) and parasympathetic (rest/digest) branches of the nervous system come into balance.
- Brain function improves—especially in areas related to decision-making, emotional regulation, and empathy.
Heart coherence is cultivated through practices that combine slow, intentional breathing with a regenerative emotional focus, such as appreciation, love, care, or compassion. According to the HeartMath Institute, heart coherence supports resilience, enhances wellbeing, and improves how we relate to others and ourselves, especially in high-stress environments or healing journeys.
