Our co-host David Woodruff has Eric Wolgemuth from Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania again today talking about that dryland corn in Kimball and some frost. Let's get into that conversation and find out more. "I think this frost is pretty general and so it shut that stuff down which isn't you know not too bad really." Kind of like normal then. "Yeah so the season was kind of late but I would say that this killing frost wasn't really late." Yeah. "So it's been nice to have another couple weeks but it'll be all right." Any blessing is a blessing you know. I don't think we've had much of a killing frost here. Well we might have. I've been covering my tomatoes and then come out and it doesn't work and I tell people Murphy's law works over time on my place and follows me faithfully wherever I go so I know better cover them up and then it won't freeze. It didn't really like I think 30 degrees is about all it was 20. "Yeah. I mean so it didn't really freeze the whole way to the ground but beans a little bit of frost can sure ding them." They're a little ticklish. "Yeah." So now you said there was something about corn at Kimball. Is that irrigated corn? "No it's some dry land that made it." Now somebody I talked to in the last couple of days said oh yeah I got time for you Dave. It's raining. They had had more rain I think it was in western Iowa. They'd had more rain in the month of September than we get over a two-year period up here in western Canada and so he had time to talk to me and he said it wasn't bad. What do you got? Oh maybe a quarter inch and I go quarter inch is a real blessing to us. That's going to do it for today's Harvest USA report. There's more on the web at harvestusareport.com. Thanks again for listening and may God bless. I'm Brian Hale.

    • Eric Wolgemuth of Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania, gave an update on harvest progress both at home and in western Kansas. Most of the combines are back in Pennsylvania, with one still operating in Kansas near Sharon Springs and in Kimball, Nebraska. Harvest in Kansas is underway, though some corn had been waiting to dry down, and Eric estimated they were still a couple of weeks from finishing there if weather remains favorable.

    • In Pennsylvania, harvest is in full swing. They are currently harvesting corn, and full-season soybeans are mostly finished. Double-crop soybeans, planted after small grains like wheat and barley, are still ahead. Eric explained that double-cropping is common in the area, with barley harvested first because it matures earlier, followed by wheat, and then soybeans planted behind both.

    • The discussion also covered crop maturity and frost. Eric said the double-crop beans were generally close to maturity when a recent killing frost hit. While the growing season had been somewhat late, the frost was not unusually late and likely only shortened the season slightly. He noted that soybeans can be affected by even light frost, but overall the crop appeared to be in reasonably good shape.

    • The conversation ended with a brief comparison of rainfall in different regions and a mention that the corn near Kimball was dryland corn that had survived. The host closed by wishing Eric and his crew safety and success for the remainder of harvest.
