The clock is ticking on a small but potentially important experiment in Canadian democracy: federal petition e‑6679, otherwise known as the “Political Honesty Petition.”

Petition e‑6679 remains open for signatures only until 9:00 AM this Thursday, November 27, 2025. After that, the window to express your support for this bold request closes.

Hosted on the House of Commons’ official e‑petition platform, Petition e‑6679, created by concerned citizen, Fed Sanchez, calls on Parliament to explore concrete limits on how far MPs can stretch the truth when speaking to the public, especially when misinformation is deliberate. The petition points to the growing concern that unchecked falsehoods - amplified by social media and artificial intelligence - are eroding trust in democratic institutions. The petition asks the House of Commons to begin work on a bill that would create real consequences for knowingly misleading Canadians.
Crucially, the petition does not demand an off‑the‑shelf law. Instead, it suggests that any bill could be informed by A Model for Political Honesty, a detailed Welsh policy blueprint that would allow an independent process to investigate serious cases of deliberate deception by politicians.

Canada is watching misinformation reshape politics across our country and around the world. Other jurisdictions—such as South Australia, the ACT, and Wales—are actively experimenting with ways to draw a line between hard‑fought political debate and outright, consequences‑free lying in public office.
Petition e‑6679 does not pretend to have all the answers. What it does say, clearly, is that doing nothing is no longer an option.

Personally, I do not think that expecting honesty from our elected officials is too much to ask for.
