Women's History Month is an annual celebration that recognizes the significant contributions and achievements of women throughout history and contemporary society. It is observed in March in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia, coinciding with International Women's Day on March 8th. In Canada, it is celebrated in October to coincide with the anniversary of the Persons Case on October 18th, 1929. The origins of Women's History Month date back to the early 20th century with the first International Women's Day in 1911. However, the concept of dedicating an entire month to women's history emerged much later. In the United States, it began as Women's History Week in Santa Rosa, California, in 1978, organized by the Education Task Force of the Sonoma County Commission on the Status of Women. The week of March 8th was chosen to correspond with International Women's Day. The movement to recognize women's historical contributions quickly gained momentum, and in 1980, President Jimmy Carter issued the first Presidential Proclamation declaring the week of March 8th as National Women's History Week. The push to expand the celebration from a week to a month gained support, and in 1987, after being petitioned by the National Women's History Project, Congress passed Public Law 100-9, designating March as Women's History Month. Since then, each year has had a specific theme, and the President issues a proclamation to honor the achievements of American women.
