Michele Fitzsimmons

Michele Fitzsimmons is a Deputy Chief in the Fire Department of New York (FDNY), the largest municipal fire department in the United States. She made history as the first woman to reach this rank in fire operations.

Coming from a multi-generational firefighter family, Michele joined the FDNY in 2001 and steadily rose through the ranks—Lieutenant, Captain, Battalion Chief, and ultimately Deputy Chief. Known for her leadership, resilience, and commitment to service, she has also played a key role in mentoring and inspiring women in the fire service.

Beyond her operational leadership, Michele has contributed to initiatives like the Fire Service Women of New York and helped launch a summer camp introducing young women to firefighting careers—expanding opportunities and building confidence in the next generation.
