Episode 182: Liz Allan and Jamie Sands - Electric HGVs and Zero Emission Freight Made Commercial.

Liz Allan is joined by Jamie Sands, Head of Solutions at Welch Group, to explore what it will really take to decarbonise UK freight in a way that works commercially, not just on paper.

Jamie shares his journey from retail into logistics and explains how Welsh Group has used electrification as a springboard for wider innovation, from electric trucks and depot charging through to smarter use of operational data, and the emerging role of AI in reducing complexity across an already high-pressure sector.

Together, Liz and Jamie discuss why parts of the industry remain sceptical about EVs and net zero, and why Jamie believes the biggest issue is not the vehicles themselves but energy, specifically gaining real control over fuel costs for the first time in a century. They also get into the practical realities: grid connections, megawatt charging, driver breaks, the true total cost of ownership, and why communicating the opportunity to tens of thousands of operators remains one of the hardest challenges.

Jamie also introduces TwentyForty, an innovation ecosystem designed to help freight operators collaborate, access emerging solutions, and influence policy through real-world operational insight.

Episode 181: Liz Allan and Jonathan Porterfield - Used EV Bargains, Battery Longevity and the Auction Advantage.

Liz Allan speaks to Jonathan Porterfield, former owner of Eco Cars in Orkney and a long-time EV early adopter, now sharing weekly insights from Shoreham Vehicle Auctions on YouTube. From driving electric across Europe to tracking what used EVs actually sell for at auction, Jonathan breaks down the realities behind range anxiety, charging confidence, and the biggest myth of all: battery longevity.

Liz and Jonathan discuss how he built Eco Cars from a buy-to-order model, why word of mouth and transparency mattered more than flashy listings, and what auctions can teach everyday drivers about genuine EV value. Jonathan also shares why legacy dealerships have struggled to adapt, the shift in profit models as servicing changes, and why high-mileage EV stories are one of the most powerful ways to build public confidence.

    Jonathan Porterfield Bio:
Jonathan Porterfield is the former founder of Eco Cars, a specialist used EV sales business that operated from Orkney and served customers across the UK. He is now retired, but remains deeply active in the EV space through his YouTube channel, where he shares weekly auction-focused videos highlighting used EV prices and what to look for when buying. Jonathan is known for making EV ownership feel practical and achievable, especially for drivers considering the second-hand market.

    Quote of the Episode:
“People read one story about degradation on a Nissan Leaf and think it applies to everything.” Jonathan Porterfield.

Episode 180: Liz Allan and Lulu O' Hagan - Making EVs Simple Through Community, Confidence and Real Experience.

Liz Allan is joined by Lulu O'Hagan, founder of EVs Made Easy and the Ham EV Group in London, for an open and engaging conversation about what it really takes to help people feel confident about switching to electric vehicles.

Lulu shares her fascinating journey from film and TV production into EV advocacy, driven by lived experience rather than industry jargon. She talks candidly about becoming one of the first EV drivers in her local area, navigating charging without a driveway, and why community support has been essential in helping more people make the transition.

The conversation explores the most persistent myths about electric vehicles, from batteries and range to charging costs, and why real-world experience often outweighs technical explanations. Liz and Lulu also discuss the role of collaboration in improving the EV driver experience, particularly for those living in flats or urban areas, and how small, local actions can have a meaningful impact.

Alongside her EV work, Lulu brings insight from the film and television industry, noting that sustainability is increasingly influencing production decisions, including the use of electric vehicles on set and the growing importance of the Green Rider.

This episode is an honest look at how making EVs simpler, more social and accessible can help build confidence, trust and momentum in the journey towards net zero.

    Quote of the episode:
