Today I'm sharing the story of the most legendary merchant of late Qing Dynasty China—Hu Xueyan.

From a thirteen-year-old apprentice at a money house to the wealthiest Red-Capped Merchant, Hu Xueyan's life was filled with dramatic ups and downs. With his keen business insight, extensive network of connections, and exceptional courage, he built a massive business empire. The pharmacy he founded, Huqingyutang, upheld the principle of "No Deception," insisting on top quality. It has now been passed down for over one hundred and fifty years and is one of China's four major pharmacies.

But what goes up must come down. When he attempted to monopolize the silk market, he faced both international market changes and political struggles. He ultimately fell from being the richest man to bankruptcy, dying in poverty and illness.

Hu Xueyan's story teaches us that success requires wisdom, courage, and reputation, but also requires knowing how to read the times and when to advance or retreat. His spirit of daring to fight and strive, his character of loyalty and keeping promises, and his never-give-up perseverance are all worth learning from and reflecting upon.
