    This week, we look at revenge movies and ask: What do we actually want from a revenge movie? Justice? Punishment? Catharsis? Or just to see the bad guy suffer?

    The Lineup:

    I Spit on Your Grave (1978):
    Writer Jennifer Hills leaves NYC for an isolated Connecticut cottage to work on a novel, where she is attacked by local men. After surviving, the tables turn as she methodically kills them one by one. Starring Camille Keaton. Produced on an extremely low budget of about $80,000.

    The Accused (1988):
    In contrast to personal vengeance, Sarah Tobias demands that society punish her attackers as revenge becomes justice through the legal system. Stars Jodie Foster and Kelly McGillis. Produced on a budget of approximately $13 million, it grossed roughly $32.1 million domestically.

    Irréversible (2002):
    Unfolding backwards, this film is technically a revenge movie, but basically destroys the fantasy of revenge movies showing that revenge can never undo what happened. Stars Monica Bellucci and Vincent Cassel. Produced on a budget of about €4.6 million, with a reported gross of about €5.8 million.

    The Skin I Live In (2011):
    Directed by Pedro Almodóvar. Renowned plastic surgeon Robert Ledgard keeps a mysterious woman named Vera imprisoned in his mansion in the weirdest revenge movie on the list. Stars Antonio Banderas and Elena Anaya. Produced on a budget of roughly $13.5 million, it grossed roughly $30.8 million worldwide.

    Promising Young Woman (2020):
    Cassie takes everything the earlier films explored and changes the target, attacking the friends, institution, lawyer, and bystanders who remained silent after her best friend's sexual assault and suicide. Stars Carey Mulligan, Bo Burnham, and Alfred Molina. Produced on a budget of approximately $10 million, it earned $20 million.

    This week, we take a look at movies with male actors in drag and explore the history, cultural meaning, and unforgettable stories about how Hollywood has used men in dresses for comedy, disguise, identity, and drama.

    The Lineup:
    Some Like It Hot (1959): Directed by Billy Wilder. Musicians Joe and Jerry witness a mob massacre and need to get out of Chicago, disguising themselves as Josephine and Daphne to join an all-female band headed to Florida. Starring Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis, and Jack Lemmon.

    Tootsie (1982):
    Directed by Sydney Pollack. Dustin Hoffman plays Michael Dorsey, an actor who creates actress Dorothy Michaels to land a soap opera role. Produced on a budget of roughly $15–22 million, it earned ten Oscar nominations, including Best Actor for Hoffman and Best Supporting Actress for winner Jessica Lange.

    Mrs. Doubtfire (1993):
    Directed by Chris Columbus. Robin Williams stars as Daniel Hillard, a father who loses custody access after his divorce and creates an elderly British nanny persona to stay close to his children. Produced on a budget of approximately $25 million, it grossed roughly $441 million worldwide.

    I Like It Like That (1994):
    Written and directed by Darnell Martin. Set in the Bronx, the film stars Lauren Velez and Jon Seda, featuring Jesse Borrego as Alexis, a Latina trans woman navigating family rejection while saving up for gender-affirming surgery.

    To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar (1995):
    Directed by Beeban Kidron. Patrick Swayze, Wesley Snipes, and John Leguizamo star as drag queens on a road trip who break down in a small town and change the townspeople’s perspectives.

    Big Momma's House (2000):
    Directed by Raja Gosnell. FBI agent Malcolm Turner, played by Martin Lawrence, disguises himself as an enormous Southern grandmother to surveil Sherry. Produced on a budget of about $30 million, it grossed roughly $174 million worldwide.

    Holiday Heart (2000):
    Directed by Robert Townsend. Ving Rhames stars as Holiday Heart, a gay Christian drag performer and grieving partner who becomes a surrogate parent to a young girl. Released on Showtime.

    Diary of a Mad Black Woman (2005):
    Directed by Darren Grant. Tyler Perry stars as Madea, a popular female character created by Perry that launched a massive film franchise. Produced on a budget of about $5.5 million, it made roughly $50.5 million worldwide.

    This week, we take a look at Hollywood discovering hip-hop and explore the movies, history, behind the scenes facts, and unforgettable stories about the five-film crash course on how hip-hop went from a New York subculture to something Hollywood realized it could monetize.

    The Lineup:

    Wild Style (1983):
    Directed by Charlie Ahearn. The first hip-hop feature film, shot in the Bronx with a budget around $200K. Plot follows Zoro, an underground graffiti writer wanting to remain anonymous as the art world begins sniffing around graffiti culture. Stars actual graffiti artist Lee Quiñones, Fab 5 Freddy, Lady Pink, and Rock Steady Crew.

    Breakin' (1984):
    Produced by Cannon Films. About a classically trained white jazz dancer named Kelly who discovers street dancing through Ozone (Adolfo “Shabba-Doo” Quinones) and Turbo (Michael “Boogaloo Shrimp” Chambers). Earned $38.7M on a $2M budget and was inspired by the 1983 documentary Breakin' 'n' Enterin'. Beat Street (1984): Directed by Stan Lathan and produced by Harry Belafonte. Incorporating DJs, MCs, graffiti writers, and breakers into one narrative, this film uses graffiti as a major story device to depict rebellion, artistic expression, and tragedy.

    Rappin' (1985):
    Filmed in Pittsburgh and released by the same producer as Breakin'. Focuses on John Hood, a former prisoner who chooses rap music over violence to save his neighborhood from developers and gang involvement.

    Krush Groove (1985):
    Directed by Michael Schultz. Loosely inspired by the beginnings of Def Jam Records, this film skips fictional rappers to feature real-life hip-hop stars including Run-DMC, Kurtis Blow, The Fat Boys, and LL Cool J, with Blair Underwood portraying a fictionalized Russell Simmons.
