  • The Occult History of Halloween: Separating Ritual From Legend
    Oct 30 2026
This episode investigates the occult history of Halloween by following the evidence behind Samhain, All Hallows’ Eve, and the modern holiday. It begins with Irish folklore records collected by schoolchildren in nineteen thirty-seven and nineteen thirty-eight, then moves backward and forward through medieval Irish literature, Christian calendar history, Geoffrey Keating’s seventeenth-century account of a Samhain fire at Tlachtga, Robert Burns’s eighteenth-century poem Halloween, nineteenth-century scholarship by Sir John Rhys and James Frazer, and Ronald Hutton’s recent reassessment of the evidence. The public story often presents Halloween as one ancient Celtic rite: a New Year, a feast of the dead, a druidic ceremony, and sometimes a night of sacrifice. The surviving record supports a more careful account. Samhain was important in medieval Irish literature and later folklore preserved many seasonal customs, but medieval texts are not direct eyewitness records of pre-Christian ritual. All Saints’ and All Souls’ observances shaped the calendar, but the claim that the Church chose November first specifically to suppress Samhain remains unproven. There is no documented Samhain secret society, membership roll, or verified ancient Halloween order. The unresolved question is how far historical evidence can go before tradition becomes legend.

  • Twin Flames Universe: The Online Love Cult That Promised a Perfect Match
    Oct 24 2026
Twin Flames Universe began as an online spiritual and relationship community built around one powerful promise: that each person has a destined romantic partner, a twin flame, and that Jeff and Shaleia Divine could help members reach harmonious union. Through online videos, Facebook groups, paid classes, and coaching programs, TFU grew into a largely digital organization for people seeking love, healing, spiritual certainty, or personal purpose. Former members later told journalists and documentary producers that the promise came with escalating costs, leader-guided matches, pressure to pursue unwilling partners, strained family ties, and practices that redirected doubt back onto the member. TFU disputes those accounts and says participation is voluntary and supportive. This episode follows the documented record from the founders’ early relationship content to Vanity Fair and VICE investigations, federal litigation involving critics, the Netflix and Prime Video documentaries, TFU’s public response, and the July 2025 Michigan Attorney General announcement that search warrants had been executed in an ongoing investigation.

  • The Source Family: The Hollywood Cult Built Around a Charismatic Guru
    Oct 16 2026
In late nineteen-sixties and early nineteen-seventies Los Angeles, Jim Baker opened The Source, a health-food restaurant on Sunset Boulevard that became the financial engine and social doorway for a communal spiritual movement. Known to followers as Father Yod and later YaHoWha, Baker gathered roughly one hundred to one hundred fifty members into shared houses, meditation, vegetarian practice, music, labor, new names, and a family structure centered on his authority. Former member Isis Aquarian, one of his spiritual wives and the group’s designated documentarian, preserved photographs, films, recordings, scrapbooks, and teachings that now shape much of what can be known about the group. The Source Family was public, artistic, and beloved by some members, but it also raises serious questions about charismatic authority, gender, sexuality, age, children, dissent, money, and dependency. The community moved from a Los Feliz mansion to Nichols Canyon, then sold the restaurant and left for Hawaii in late nineteen seventy-four. In August nineteen seventy-five, Baker died after a hang-gliding crash, leaving members to decide whether a family built around one man could survive without him. The central unresolved question is not whether every member had the same experience. They did not. It is how a restaurant-based counterculture experiment could offer real belonging while concentrating so much power in one leader.

  • The Ku Klux Klan’s Secret Rituals: How a Terror Group Built a Hidden Fraternal System
    Oct 9 2026
This episode examines the first Ku Klux Klan of Reconstruction, not the later organization revived in nineteen fifteen. In Pulaski, Tennessee, around May or early June eighteen sixty-six, a small circle of former Confederate soldiers formed a private fraternity with comic titles, disguises, initiation customs, and secrecy pledges. Within a few years, local dens across parts of the South were linked to intimidation and violence against Black citizens, Republican voters, officeholders, teachers, and allies of Reconstruction. The story follows the group’s surviving Prescripts, its uneven hierarchy, the limits of central control, and the way secrecy and fraternal ritual helped armed local men avoid accountability. A central witness is Abram Colby, a formerly enslaved Georgia legislator who testified before Congress that men abducted and whipped him after he refused money to leave office or abandon Republican politics. Federal investigators, President Ulysses S. Grant, Attorney General Amos T. Akerman, Congress, and the courts then tried to prove and suppress a dispersed campaign of political terror. The episode separates documented ritual from later Klan mythology, including symbols and ceremonies that belong mainly to the twentieth-century revival. The unresolved question is how much violence was centrally directed, and how much was protected by local power, disguise, and community silence.

  • The Thule Society: The Occult Circle at the Edge of Early Nazism
    Oct 2 2026
In Munich after the First World War, the Thule Society presented itself as a selective association for Germanic antiquity while promoting völkisch racial nationalism, antisemitism, and counterrevolutionary politics. Organized by Rudolf von Sebottendorff, officially chaired by Friedrich Knauf, and rooted in the older Germanenorden, Thule occupied rooms in the Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten, gained influence through publishing, and helped connect elite nationalist circles with worker-oriented agitation through figures such as Karl Harrer and Anton Drexler. This episode follows the documented trail: a hotel raid in April nineteen nineteen, the killing of prisoners at the Luitpoldgymnasium, the formation of the German Workers’ Party, the later rise of Adolf Hitler within that party, and the transfer of a newspaper that became the Völkischer Beobachter. It also tests later claims that Thule created Nazism or secretly controlled the movement. The record shows real influence through meetings, propaganda, relationships, and political violence, but it does not prove occult command, Hitler’s initiation, or exclusive authorship of Nazi power. The unresolved question is narrower and more important: how should history measure a contributing network when its founder later tried to claim ownership of a much larger catastrophe?

  • The Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn: The Occult Society That Shaped Modern Magic
    Sep 25 2026
In Victorian Britain, the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn offered a private path into occult study through graded initiation, ritual, symbolism, and restricted instruction. Founded in 1888 by William Wynn Westcott, William Robert Woodman, and Samuel Liddell MacGregor Mathers, it drew physicians, artists, actors, writers, and patrons, including Florence Farr, Annie Horniman, W. B. Yeats, Moina Mathers, and, later, Aleister Crowley.
This episode follows the order from Westcott’s cipher manuscripts and claimed Anna Sprengel authorization to the creation of the Inner Order under Mathers. The central conflict was not a murder case or a proven criminal conspiracy. It was a dispute over legitimacy: who had the right to lead, initiate, teach, recognize grades, and control access to the order’s documents and rooms.
The strongest documented scene came in April 1900 at 36 Blythe Road in London, when Crowley, acting for Mathers and assisted by Elaine Simpson, tried to assert control over the Inner Order rooms. Yeats’s circulated participant account describes a confrontation resolved not by a magical duel, but by tenancy, a landlord, members, and a policeman. The unified order fractured, while its rituals and writings survived through successor groups, publications, and later practice.

  • The OTO: The Occult Order Behind Aleister Crowley
    Sep 18 2026
Ordo Templi Orientis, or OTO, is often remembered through Aleister Crowley, but it began before him in the early twentieth-century world of European occult fraternities, irregular Freemasonry, Rosicrucian systems, and competing claims to secret initiation. Its formative figures were Carl Kellner and Theodor Reuss. Crowley entered later, bringing Thelema, the religious and philosophical system based on The Book of the Law, and reshaped OTO’s rituals, doctrine, public worship, and institutional identity around it.
This episode follows the evidence from Reuss-era charters and publications to Crowley’s 1912 British authority, his later account of being confronted over Chapter 69 of The Book of Lies, the creation of the Gnostic Mass, the rupture after Reuss, the Weida conference, California’s Agape Lodge, Jack Parsons, Karl Germer, Grady McMurtry, rival succession claims, and court battles over Crowley’s legacy.
The case is not treated as a simple story of an ancient order, a criminal conspiracy, or a supernatural plot. It is a documented dispute over secrecy, ritual authority, sexual-esoteric teaching, religious identity, archives, copyrights, trademarks, and succession. The surviving record verifies Crowley’s promotion while leaving the claimed revelatory recognition unproven.

  • The Knights Templar: The Secret Order That Became Too Powerful
    Sep 11 2026
In France, on Friday the thirteenth of October, thirteen hundred and seven, King Philip the Fourth ordered the mass arrest of the Knights Templar, one of medieval Christianity’s most privileged military-religious orders. Founded in Jerusalem in the early twelfth century to protect pilgrims and defend crusader territory, the Templars grew into a transnational institution of monks, warriors, estate managers, lenders, and papal servants. Their houses stretched across Europe and the eastern Mediterranean. Their secrecy, wealth, discipline, and independence made them admired, useful, and politically difficult to control.
After the fall of Acre in twelve ninety-one, the Order’s military purpose weakened while its property and privileges remained. Philip’s government accused the Templars of secret initiation crimes: denial of Christ, spitting on the cross, illicit kissing, sexual misconduct, and idol worship. Many confessed in France, where torture was used. Outside France, the pattern looked different. Pope Clement the Fifth challenged royal control, and the Chinon Parchment records that senior Templar leaders, including Jacques de Molay, were absolved by papal representatives after confession and repentance. Yet the Order was still suppressed in thirteen twelve, and Molay was burned in Paris in thirteen fourteen.
This episode follows the evidence behind the trial, the politics behind the prosecution, and the unresolved question: did investigators expose real corruption inside the Temple, or did limited misconduct become the weapon used to destroy an inconvenient international order?
