  • The Maryland Goatman: The Axe-Wielding Creature of Prince George’s County Legend
    Oct 9 2026
In November nineteen seventy-one, two young men searching near the Penn Central railroad tracks in Old Bowie, Maryland, reportedly found a ten-month-old puppy named Ginger dead, with her head and body separated. Within days, the death was connected in local newspaper coverage to the Goatman: a supposed half-human, half-goat figure said to roam the woods and roads of Prince George’s County.
But the surviving record tells a more complicated story. Months before Ginger disappeared, University of Maryland student George Lizama had collected eight versions of a Goatman legend around Tucker Road in Clinton. Then reporter Karen Hosler brought the story into print, shifting its setting to Fletchertown Road in Bowie. Teenagers reported strange noises and a large hairy figure. The puppy’s death gave the legend a real and disturbing event around which it could grow.
This episode follows the archive file, the newspaper reports, the reported sighting by April Edwards, John Hayden, and Willie Gheen, and the later dispute over Ginger’s death. One later family account claimed the dog had been struck by a train and that the Goatman story had been a prank. Other witnesses continued to insist they had seen something.
No specimen, diagnostic biological sample, authenticated photograph, track cast, police file, or veterinary report has been located. The question is not whether the Goatman can be declared real or unreal from one case. It is how a local story moved from a student folklore project to a Bowie panic—and whether anything unknown was ever present on Fletchertown Road.

  • The Snallygaster: Maryland’s Winged, Tentacled Monster
    Oct 1 2026
In February 1909, the Valley Register of Middletown, Maryland, warned readers about a winged creature called the Snallygaster. The article named James Harding and Bill Gifferson in an alleged attack near the Middletown Valley and South Mountain. What survives is not a specimen or an official case file, but a sequence of newspaper pages.
This episode follows the dated record from the February 12 launch story through the February 19 Ohio extension and the March 5 Emmitsburg escalation. It then returns to the Valley Register’s 1932 revival, its report naming Charles F. Main and Edward M. L. Lighter, a reader’s objection, an editorial ending, and a later reprint in Chestertown.
The surviving material strongly supports a manufactured newspaper-folklore campaign, particularly through the Register’s December 2 editorial wording and later historical analysis. But the record also leaves a narrow question open: whether some unidentified animal report ever existed outside the articles that transformed the Snallygaster into Maryland legend.

  • The Loveland Frogmen: Ohio’s Upright Frog Creatures
    Sep 24 2026
The Loveland Frogman legend is often told as one continuous story: frog-like creatures seen beside the Little Miami River in the nineteen fifties, then witnessed by police officers in nineteen seventy-two, then photographed again in twenty sixteen. The surviving record is more complicated.
This episode follows restaurant worker Robert Hunnicutt, who reported three strange figures near Branch Hill in nineteen fifty-five and sought help from Loveland Police Chief John K. Fritz. It separates Hunnicutt’s account from a different report by a young Civil Defense volunteer who said he saw four small figures beneath a bridge. It then turns to patrolmen Ray Shockey and Mark Mathews, whose nineteen seventy-two reports helped create the modern Frogman image.
The strongest evidence is not a specimen or a clear creature photograph. It is a chain of witness accounts, newspaper coverage, a witness-guided drawing, an artist’s conception, dark twenty sixteen images supplied by Sam Jacobs, and one major contradiction. A nineteen seventy-two newspaper said an animal shot by Mathews entered the river. In twenty sixteen, Mathews said he recovered it and identified it as a tailless iguana.
Did several Loveland witnesses encounter one recurring upright animal, or did distinct reports gradually become a single enduring legend?
