In this special episode of Couch Critics Conversations, we sit down with Costa Dillon, the creative mind behind the legendary Attack of the Killer Tomatoes franchise. Costa takes us through the wild journey from making low-budget Super 8 films in the '70s to creating one of the earliest parody movies that became a cult phenomenon. We dive into the influences of silent film comedians like Buster Keaton and the Marx Brothers, the challenges and joys of practical effects over CGI, and the meta humor that made the Tomatoes films so iconic. Costa also shares behind-the-scenes stories from working with a young George Clooney, balancing filmmaking with a career in the National Park Service, and what inspired him to revive the franchise with the new film Organic Intelligence. Plus, we discuss the dynamics of cult films, the importance of film festivals, and Costa's creative advice for aspiring filmmakers: "Make no small plans." Whether you're a longtime fan or discovering the franchise for the first time, this conversation is packed with humor, history, and heart.
