This week on Rick’s Rambles, we take a trip from the checkerboard to Mayberry to Key Largo—and along the way, we talk about something that matters a little more than winning, being noticed, or getting applause.
🎲 Fun Facts: Checkers How old is the game of checkers? Where did it come from, and why has this simple little board game remained part of our culture for centuries? We’ll look at the history, the strategy, and some of the surprising places checkers has shown up along the way.
💚 Mental Health: Charity When No One Is Looking What happens when we do something good but nobody sees us do it? Inspired by the classic Andy Griffith Show episode “Opie’s Charity,” we’ll look at generosity, appearances, and the difference between doing something because it’s right and doing it because we want recognition.
🎵 The Story Behind the Song: “Key Largo” Bertie Higgins’ 1981 hit “Key Largo” became a nostalgic escape to another time and place. We’ll talk about the song, the man who wrote and recorded it, what inspired it, and what happened to Higgins after his big hit.
And, as always, we’ll wrap things up with a look at some of the fun, quirky, and downright unusual holidays coming up this week.
It’s another collection of stories, memories, music, history, and a little bit of mental health conversation—just the kind of things we like to ramble about.
Listen in, and maybe share Rick’s Rambles with someone who might enjoy coming along for the ride.
