When He encountered a world needing better, Jesus leaned in and partnered with His people. He was sent to suffering and sends His followers to do the same. Matthew 10 reminds us that although we will be questioned, divided, called names, and threatened, He will give us answers and save us. He brings the truth, and He never leaves us. If we are sent to suffering, we can ask for wisdom, endurance, and presence. If we aren't, we should question if we are observers or participants.

We have been sent to share with others what we have received through a life with Jesus. How do we do that? We follow Jesus’ compassionate heart, leaning in when it’s easy to draw back. His compassionate response to suffering is to commission His followers. Jesus’ words in Matthew 10:1-14 remind us of the ways we show up as compassionate disciple-makers. We speak and act, give and receive, stay and go. How will you show up with compassion this week in places that seem easy to draw back?

To show compassion is to suffer with another person. You can’t show compassion from far away; you have to get close, offering patience, service, and love to the suffering. In Matthew 9:35-38, Jesus demonstrates compassion and invites His followers to live compassionately, too. Where will you practice compassion this week?

When was the last time you felt lost in the dark? When we try to find good without God, we find ourselves far from the good God had in mind for us, trying to find our way in the dark. The Good News is that because of the promise fulfilled in Jesus, we have the opportunity to walk out of the darkness. The story of the gospel is a promise fulfilled that was set 700 years before Jesus' arrival on earth. Take a closer look at how Jesus is our light in the darkness.
