Send us a text, tell us your canadian creepy!

On a busy Saturday afternoon in June 2012, Toronto's Eaton Centre was packed with shoppers, families, tourists, and teenagers grabbing lunch. In just 15 seconds, one of Canada's busiest public spaces became the scene of a mass shooting.

When Christopher Husbands opened fire in the crowded food court, two young men were killed, several bystanders were injured, and thousands fled in panic. But the story didn't begin at the Eaton Centre. Months earlier, Husbands had survived a brutal attack that left him stabbed 36 times, setting in motion a chain of events that would end in tragedy.

In this episode, we examine the Eaton Centre shooting, the victims and survivors caught in the chaos, the remarkable story of Jessica Ghawi—who narrowly escaped the shooting only to be killed weeks later in the Aurora theater massacre—and the decade-long legal battle that followed.

From trauma and revenge to PTSD, public safety, and the limits of criminal responsibility, this is the story of 15 seconds that changed countless lives forever.

Welcome to Down the Crooked Path.

Long before modern doomsday preppers and internet conspiracy movements, a self-proclaimed prophet was building his own kingdom on Vancouver Island.

Edward Wilson, founder of the Aquarian Foundation, promised his followers spiritual enlightenment, secret knowledge, and survival through the catastrophes he claimed were coming. As the years passed, the movement became increasingly isolated. Followers devoted their lives, labour, and resources to Wilson's vision while stockpiles of gold, weapons, and supplies grew behind the scenes.

To some, Wilson seemed gifted. His warnings about economic collapse and the rise of dictators convinced many that he possessed genuine foresight. To others, he was a manipulative leader using fear and devotion to maintain control.

As tensions with authorities escalated and lawsuits threatened to expose the foundation's inner workings, Wilson disappeared—taking a fortune in gold with him and leaving behind one of British Columbia's strangest unsolved mysteries.

Join us as we explore the rise and fall of the Aquarian Foundation, a story of prophecy, power, paranoia, and the man who vanished without a trace.

  • 069b Canada's Role in the Genocide of Palestinians: Aid, Arms, and Accountability
    Jun 11 2026

Send us a text, tell us your canadian creepy!

In this episode, we examine Canada's response to the ongoing crisis in Palestine, from military export loopholes and refugee policies to the human cost borne by families both overseas and here at home. We explore the origins of the conflict, the realities of life in Gaza and the West Bank, and the growing gap between Canada's international reputation and its actions.

Through survivor accounts, government policy, and the experiences of Palestinian-Canadians fighting to bring loved ones to safety, we ask a difficult question: what responsibility does a country have when its words and actions no longer align?

This episode contains discussions of war, displacement, sexual violence, detention, death, and genocide.

Send us a text, tell us your canadian creepy!

Welcome to Down the Crooked Path.

In 1878, a young woman named Esther Cox became the center of one of Canada's most famous paranormal mysteries. What began after a traumatic event soon escalated into violent disturbances that terrified family, neighbours, and investigators alike.

Strange knocks echoed through the walls. Objects moved on their own. Fires broke out without explanation. Wherever Esther went, the phenomena seemed to follow.

As news of the case spread, investigators attempted to communicate with unseen forces, while actor and author Walter Hubbell transformed the story into a sensation that would captivate the public for generations.

But beneath the ghost stories and headlines lies a more complicated question. Was Esther haunted by a supernatural force, targeted by public hysteria, or struggling with the aftermath of trauma in a world that had few answers?

Join us as we explore the Amherst Mystery, one of Canada's most enduring tales of the unexplained.

  • 069a Canada's Role in the Genocide of Palestinians: Aid, Arms, and Accountability
    Jun 4 2026

Send us a text, tell us your canadian creepy!

Canada is often portrayed as a nation of peacekeepers, diplomats, and honest brokers on the world stage. But how much of that image reflects reality?

In this episode, researched by Christine, we examine Canada's historical and modern relationship to Palestine, from the 1947 UN Partition Plan and the legacy of Lester B. Pearson's peacekeeping myth to military exports, refugee policy, and the ongoing debate surrounding Canada's role in one of the most consequential humanitarian crises of our time.

We explore the origins of the conflict, the promises made by colonial powers, the displacement of Palestinians, and the ways Canada's actions have often contrasted with its international reputation.

This is not an episode about simple answers. It is an examination of history, policy, power, and the uncomfortable space between a country's values and its actions.

    May 28 2026

Send us a text, tell us your canadian creepy!

    Episode Description

In 2013, the internet crowned a new folk hero almost overnight.

A drifter with a hatchet, a viral interview, and a catchphrase that spread across the internet faster than anyone could stop to ask an important question: who was Kai, really?

In Part 02, we follow the collapse of the legend.

Researched by Christine, this episode examines the murder of Joseph Galfy, the investigation that transformed a viral celebrity into a murder suspect, and the courtroom battle that followed. We break down Kai’s self-defense claims, the prosecution’s argument, the infamous train station footage, the appeals process, and the media circus that continued long after the guilty verdict.

We also examine the broader themes surrounding the case: internet celebrity culture, media exploitation, mental health, homelessness, and the dangerous speed at which social media turns complicated people into heroes… and then villains.

Finally, we explore the 2023 Netflix documentary The Hatchet Wielding Hitchhiker and ask whether the media learned anything at all from Kai’s story—or whether the machine simply found another tragedy to monetize.

This episode contains discussion of violence, sexual assault, mental illness, and homelessness.

    Stay curious… and stay creepy.
