  • MI6 Veteran Warns Against Politicizing Intelligence; World Robot Conference
    Aug 22 2026

President Donald Trump is betting new sanctions and economic pressure can force Tehran to accept a deal to end the war on US terms. Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps may be impervious to such pressure and has plenty of ways to retaliate, including military strikes across the Gulf. The US economic pressure campaign is having an impact, risking one of Iran's worst ever economic crises, but it's unclear if it will lead to Iran's capitulation or further retaliation.

Also this weekend, China’s humanoid robot makers now control 97% of global shipments, giving Beijing an early lead over US rivals. At the World Robot Conference in Beijing, robots sort boxes, handle laundry and bag clothes.

On today's show, Bloomberg This Weekend hosts Christina Ruffini and David Gura speak with:

    - Former Head of MI6 Sir Richard Dearlove, on his concerns about politicization and personnel changes inside the CIA.

    - Bloomberg News Reporter Allen Wan at the World Robot Conference in Beijing, where Unitree declared that humanoid robots could take off commercially in just two years.

    - Kim Ghattas, Distinguished Fellow at Columbia University’s Institute of Global Politics, on how sanctions are targeting Iran's weakened regional network.

    - Nathan Grawe, Professor of Economics at Carleton College, on how US colleges are facing a shrinking student population.

Plus, David, Christina, and Alexis Christoforous play Pointed: The News Quiz for Risk Takers.

  • Meta Faces Landmark Trial; Peptides for Pets
    Aug 16 2026

Meta faces a landmark federal trial brought by 29 states over allegations that Facebook and Instagram were deliberately designed to addict young users and that the company improperly collected children’s data. The case could expose Meta to substantial penalties and potentially more consequential court-ordered changes to how its platforms operate.

Also this weekend, pet owners are spending money on experimental treatments they believe will help their pets live better and longer lives, including peptide injections, red-light therapy, and nutritional supplements. Some pet owners are giving their pets rapamycin, a drug that has shown promising anti-aging properties in studies with mice, despite the lack of official results on its effectiveness in dogs and cats.

On today’s show, Lisa Mateo, Joe Mathieu, and Carol Massar speak with:

    - California Attorney General Rob Bonta, on how the landmark youth safety case against Meta is a “tobacco moment.”

    - Anna Edney, Bloomberg News National Health Care Reporter, on the pet owners spending big on anti-aging drugs and peptides.

    - Amanda Mull, Bloomberg Businessweek Senior Reporter, on the backlash against influencers who seek to achieve physical perfection.

    - Olivia Ferney, Luxury Travel & Event Expert, on planning events for a roster of ultra-wealthy clients.

  • Trump: USS Lincoln Deployment 'Not Nearly Long Enough'
    Aug 15 2026

President Donald Trump downplayed concerns over conditions for sailors aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln, amid an uproar from service members' families as its deployment to the Middle East approaches nine months. Numerous relatives of the sailors and Marines aboard the aircraft carrier have voiced outrage at reports of food shortages, water contamination, moldy showers and long shifts in wartime aboard the vessel.

Also this weekend, Madison Square Garden Sports is proceeding with its plan to split the NBA's Knicks and the NHL's New York Rangers. The company has filed a public registration statement for the new Rangers company with the US Securities and Exchange Commission and expects the spinoff to be complete by the end of October.

On today’s show, Lisa Mateo, Joe Mathieu, and Carol Massar speak with:

    - Natalie Oliverio, Navy Veteran & Military Journalist on what the soldiers and Marines aboard the USS Lincoln are experiencing.

    - Denver Riggleman, Former US Representative (R-VA), on the war in Ukraine one year after the Trump-Putin Alaska summit.

    - Randall Williams, Bloomberg News, Senior Sports Reporter, on the billionaire rush into sports amid the Lakers deal and possible Rangers spinoff.

Plus, Joe, Carol, and Lisa discuss the stories you might have missed this week on BTW.
