  • When Pastors Weaponize the Pulpit | A Warning for Church Leaders
    Oct 28 2026

What happens when pastors use the pulpit to settle personal conflicts instead of faithfully preaching God's Word? When does a sermon stop being biblical teaching and become a way to communicate our personal frustrations?

In this episode of Beyond the Numbers I tackle an uncomfortable reality in Christian ministry: weaponizing the pulpit.

From pastors preaching about Judas after feeling betrayed to sermons about gossip that seem directed at particular church members, the danger isn't always WHAT we're preaching. Sometimes it's WHY we're preaching it.

And this isn't just about what other pastors do.

I'll share my own experiences in youth ministry, including moments when I was tempted to change a message to address a student's behavior or manufacture guilt rather than allowing Scripture to lead.

This is an honest conversation about pastoral integrity, spiritual authority, biblical preaching, and the responsibility we carry as Christian leaders.

    🔹 IN THIS EPISODE:

    - Why pastors sometimes use sermons to address personal grievances

    - The danger of attaching God's authority to our frustrations

    - How personal emotions can influence our preaching and leadership

    - Why Scripture must challenge the preacher before the congregation

    - Three questions every pastor and ministry leader should ask before preaching

    📖 SCRIPTURE DISCUSSED:

2 Timothy 4:2–4 — The responsibility to faithfully preach God's Word

James 1:19–20 — Why human anger cannot produce God's righteousness

  • What If God Gave You That Dream for Someone Else?
    Oct 21 2026

What if the dream God placed on your heart was never meant to be just about you?

This episode is the story behind an event called "Light It Up" a youth ministry event that grew from a small idea into an opportunity for churches across different denominations to come together, share the stage, and reach students with the gospel of Jesus Christ.

But this isn’t just a story about an event. It’s about overcoming fear, trusting God’s calling, stepping outside our comfort zones, and learning that ministry was never supposed to be about building our own platforms.

Sometimes we hold our dreams so tightly that we leave no room for anyone else to be part of them. We ignore God's calling We worry that we’re not qualified enough, don’t have enough resources, or aren’t the right person to make something happen. And sometimes we become so focused on our own church, our own ministry, and our own success that we forget the people we could reach by working together.

What if God wants to use the dream He’s placed in your heart to awaken a calling in someone else?

In this documentary-style episode, I reflect on the journey behind "Light It Up", the importance of unity between churches, and what can happen when ministry leaders stop competing and start building bridges.

    IN THIS EPISODE:

    • Recognizing and responding to God’s calling.

    • Overcoming the fear of not being qualified enough.

    • Moving beyond the mindset of “our church” and “our ministry.”

    • Building unity between churches and denominations.

    • Creating opportunities for other leaders to use their gifts.

    • Learning from Nehemiah’s example of faith, leadership, and shared responsibility.

    • Understanding why the Church’s mission is bigger than any one person or congregation.

    SCRIPTURE REFERENCES

📖 John 17 — Jesus’ prayer for unity among His followers.

📖 Nehemiah 1–4 — Responding to a burden, stepping out in faith, and bringing others together for a shared mission.

📖 Matthew 5:14–16 — Letting your light shine so that others glorify God.

Light It Up began as a small event for one youth ministry. And a desire to build church unity. My hope is that it grows beyond my church, beyond our community, and even beyond me.

Not because the event itself is the goal, but because students need to hear the gospel, churches need to work together, and the next generation needs people willing to step out in faith.

    YOUR TURN:

What is the dream, desire, or calling God has placed on your heart? What’s holding you back from taking that first step?

Share your thoughts in the comments. I’d love to hear your story and encourage you along the way.

If this episode speaks to you, share it with another pastor, ministry leadership, or someone who needs encouragement to take that next step of faith. Lets continue to work together to build healthy ministries.

  • Losing Your Passion for Ministry? How to Find Joy Again
    Oct 14 2026

Have you ever felt like you’ve lost your passion for ministry?

You still love Jesus. You still care about the people you’re serving. But somewhere between the meetings, the repeated mistakes, the administrative work, and the seasons when you aren’t seeing results, ministry can start feeling more like a job than a calling.

So how do you find your joy again? Especially finding joy in ministry?

In this episode of Beyond the Numbers, we’re talking about ministry burnout, losing your passion for ministry, and how to rediscover the purpose behind the work.

Whether you’re a youth pastor, senior pastor, church staff member, ministry leader, or volunteer, it’s easy to become discouraged when people aren’t growing as quickly as we’d hoped or the work doesn’t seem to be making a difference.

    We’ll talk about:

    * The frustration of watching people repeat the same mistakes.

    * When meetings, schedules, and administrative responsibilities drain your energy.

    * What to do when you’re pouring into people but aren’t seeing the results you hoped for.

    * Ezekiel 37 and the valley of dry bones.

    * How to recognize what’s draining you and what you can change.

    * Why ministry leaders need to remember their calling without trying to control every outcome.

Sometimes we lose our joy because we’ve become so focused on what isn’t happening that we’ve forgotten the people and purpose God has already entrusted to us.

We’re called to teach, disciple, pray, love people, and remain faithful. We’re not called to control every outcome.

You don’t have to recreate the excitement you felt when you started. You can rediscover the purpose that made you start.

And don’t let the ministry you’re hoping for rob you of the joy of serving the people you already have.

If you’ve been struggling with ministry burnout, feeling stuck in ministry, or wondering how to find your passion for ministry again, I hope this conversation encourages you.

  • Your Ministry Doesn’t Need You to Be Right All The Time
    Oct 7 2026

What happens when a ministry leader realizes they’re wrong—but everything inside them wants to explain why they’re actually not?

Sometimes our biggest leadership problem isn’t that we don’t know we’re capable of making mistakes.

It’s that we don’t want anyone else to know we made one.

In this episode of Beyond the Numbers, I tell a story from a youth ministry trip where I made a mistake that could have been avoided. I had plenty of explanations for why it happened. And honestly, every one of them was true.

But I was still the leader.

I had to make an uncomfortable phone call, own my part, and simply say, “I was wrong.”

That experience made me think about something deeper in ministry leadership: the difference between humility and people-pleasing, between an explanation and an excuse, and between protecting our authority and actually building trust.

Because humility doesn’t mean taking responsibility for everything. It means being willing to take responsibility for your part.

And when leaders can’t admit they’re wrong, something starts to happen. Staff stop challenging them. Volunteers stop bringing problems to them. Students learn that leaders don’t have to be accountable.

But when a leader goes first and says, “I got that wrong. I’m sorry. How can I make it right?” something different happens.

    Trust grows.

We’re not building ministries around perfect people. We’re building ministries around broken people who look to and follow a perfect Savior.

Your ministry doesn’t need you to be right.

It does need you to be real.

  • Why Your Worst Days Are Not the End of Your Ministry
    Sep 16 2026

What do you do when one bad Sunday makes you question everything?

Maybe attendance drops, message doesn’t connect, a student you’re pouring into suddenly starts struggling. Maybe someone says something that hits a little harder than they probably realized.

And suddenly, after months of seeing God move, you’re sitting there wondering, “Am I actually doing a good job?”

    I’ve been there.

In this episode of Beyond the Numbers, I talk about the emotional whiplash that can happen in ministry and why we have to be careful not to turn one difficult moment into a verdict on our entire ministry.

    We’ll talk about:

    • Why one bad night can overshadow months of faithfulness

    • The danger of turning an event into an identity

    • Why attendance is a data point, not a prophecy

    • What Jesus’ own ministry teaches us about apparent failure

    • How to keep a record of what God is doing

    • Why small wins matter

    • Why you shouldn’t make major decisions while you’re emotionally overwhelmed

    • How to separate what actually happened from what you think it means

    • Why ministry leaders need people who will tell them the truth

    • What it means to return to the next faithful thing

If you’re coming off a difficult Sunday, a disappointing event, a hard conversation, or a season where you’re questioning whether any of this is working, I hope this reminds you:

One bad night is not your ministry’s verdict.

And it certainly isn’t the final word on what God is doing in your story.

If this episode helps you, send it to another ministry leader who might need to hear it.

  • You Got the Job. Now Don’t Ruin It.
    Aug 26 2026

What should you do when you step into a new ministry? How do you lead well without trying to change everything at once?

Starting a new ministry position can be exciting — but it can also be one of the easiest times for a pastor or ministry leader to accidentally damage trust.

Whether you’re a youth pastor, children’s pastor, associate pastor, senior pastor, or church ministry leader, stepping into a new ministry requires more than having good ideas. You have to learn the culture, communicate with your team, build trust, and give people time to follow your leadership.

In this episode of Beyond the Numbers, Josh Williams talks about how to lead well after stepping into a new ministry, including:

    * How to communicate major changes with your ministry team

    * Why your core leaders should never hear important decisions from the stage first

    * The danger of trying to change everything when you first arrive

    * The “shotgun approach” to ministry leadership

    * How to build trust with volunteers, students, parents, and staff

    * Why testing ideas with a small group can make leadership healthier

    * Why attendance numbers aren’t the only measure of a healthy ministry

    * How consistency, prayer, relationships, and faithfulness build ministry over time

    * Why leading a ministry is a marathon, not a sprint

Healthy ministry leadership isn’t about proving that you were the right person for the job. It’s about building something healthy enough to outlast your need to prove yourself.

If you’re starting a new ministry position, leading a ministry team, rebuilding an unhealthy ministry, or trying to become a healthier church leader, this conversation is for you.

Beyond the Numbers is a podcast for pastors, youth pastors, children’s ministry leaders, church staff, volunteers, and ministry leaders who want to build healthier, more Christlike ministries instead of simply chasing bigger numbers.

  • Maybe God Isn’t Late — Maybe You’re Moving Too Fast
    Sep 2 2026

Why Waiting on God is the Hardest and Most Rewarding Thing You'll Ever Do

    Maybe God isn’t late.

Maybe we’re just moving faster than He asked us to.

Waiting is hard. Especially when you have a plan, a vision, a job opportunity, a relationship, or a ministry direction that feels like the obvious next step. But what happens when God doesn’t move on our timeline?

In this episode of Beyond the Numbers, we talk honestly about control, waiting, closed doors, ministry, and the moments when we are tempted to take things into our own hands simply because we’re tired of waiting.

Sometimes what feels like rejection is actually protection.

Sometimes a good idea isn’t your assignment.

And sometimes God’s timing doesn’t look like giving us what we’re waiting for at all. Sometimes it looks like God interrupting our plans and asking us to pay attention to the person or opportunity right in front of us.

    In this episode:

    * Why waiting can be harder than taking action

    * The difference between planning and trying to control everything

    * When a closed door might actually be protection

    * Why a good idea isn’t always your assignment

    * What David’s desire to build the temple can teach us about calling and timing

    * How pain and weakness can shape relationships and ministry

    * Why God’s timing can sometimes interrupt our plans

    * What to ask when you’re tired of waiting

    The question isn’t always:

    “God, why aren’t You moving?”

    Sometimes the better question is:

“God, am I trying to move without You?”

Beyond the Numbers is a podcast with real and raw conversations about healthy ministry, healthy leadership, church culture, youth ministry, pastors, ministry leaders, and becoming more Christlike leaders without falling into the toxic patterns that damage people.

If this episode connected with you, I’d genuinely love to hear your story in the comments.

What are you waiting on right now?

Or what is something you once desperately wanted that you’re now thankful God didn’t give you?

  • Before You Say Yes To A New Ministry, Ask This Question First
    Aug 19 2026

Before you ever step foot in a new ministry, there's one question that determines whether you heal it or wreck it.

In Part 1, I break down the framework I use before I ever say yes to a new role including a house analogy I picked up from a mentor years ago, why I've never changed a ministry's name in 17 years, and what a season as a Dollar General assistant manager taught me about diagnosing a struggling organization.

This is Part 1 of a two-part series. Next week: what to actually do once you're in the building. In a few weeks, I'm sitting down with Josh Griffin to go even deeper on this topic.

    00:00 – Why this became a two-parter

    01:29 – God first: prayer isn't a chapter, it's the lens

03:56 – What Dollar General taught me about diagnosing a struggling ministry

06:11 – The house question I ask in every interview

    10:49 – Why I've never changed a ministry's name

13:02 – Learning the culture before you touch anything

15:27 – Recap: house, name, culture, timing...God first
